Winter

Winter is here.

Some of you are probably aware of an epic story (not short at all) that revolves around the phrase "Winter is coming" and later on "Winter is here." These books, comics, and TV show use the topic of winter as something scary. In that fictional world, winter is not just a season, but a multi-year event that scares anyone equally.

*Snow2* You don't have to write several books and then keep your fans waiting for the last one for years. (George R.R. Martin - I'm looking at you!) You can use the concept of winter to write some short stories. The beauty of winter can be the stillness of the world after a new snow fall. The fun that can be had with the snow. From sledding and snowman building to snowball fights and snowboarding, it's all in the mix.

*Cookie* Winter also happens inside. There is a fire in the chimney and spicy cookies are baking. The mulled cider smells of cinnamon and marshmallows melt in hot chocolate. Winter transcends all genres and age groups to write for.

As you think of a topic for your next short story, let winter play a role. Winter will help you set the stage and fill in expectations that you don't have to narrate. Winter is only one word, yet it can stand in for so many words and descriptions that it can help you to adhere to word count restrictions when you write short stories for contests.

Winter is really an all-purpose word, because if you write "Winter in Southern California" it looks a whole lot different than "Winter in Alaska."
