About This Newsletter

"There is not a particle of life which does not bear poetry within it."

Gustave Flaubert

"A good poem creates a world that somehow touches the reader. That world is built of images that come to the reader through vivid sense details and the music of vivacious language."

Fright Write: Ways to Enhance Your Spooky Poetry

Have you ever gone to a 4D movie? Some amusement parks have them. Not only are you watching a movie in 3D, but you can have puffs of air blown on you, water sprayed on you, and smells pumped into the room to enhance and bring more realism to the experience.

Once again it is coming up to the spooky time of year here in the United States. Many of you may be writing some scary poetry. There are a couple of ways I found to enhance or bring another dimension to that poetry, much like 3D and 4D has brought new dimension to some movies.

Kinetic Poetry

Kinetic means movement. So, kinetic poetry involves movement. This can be movement in person, by people, animals or things, or it can be movement on a screen, or even an interactive movement of the reader with a computer program displaying the poetry. The possibilities are as endless as your imagination.

MUST HAVES

--combine poetry with one or more of the following: dance, computer images, music, noises, or anything else that brings depth to the poem and in turn brings depth to the dance, music, etc.

COULD HAVES or WHAT IS THE POET’S CHOICE IN ALL THIS?

--Any rhyme scheme, including no rhyme scheme.

--Amount of stanzas: Any.

--Amount of lines per stanza: Any.

--Meter: Any.

--Topic: Any.

Shape or Pattern Poetry

Shape poetry is exactly what it sounds like. Create a poem that is formatted into a shape. Most often the shape is a reflection of the topic or theme of the poem.

BRIEF HISTORY

This is a form that’s been around for thousands of years.

MUST HAVES

--Format the poem into a shape.

COULD HAVES or WHAT IS THE POET’S CHOICE IN ALL THIS?

--Any rhyme scheme, including no rhyme scheme.

--Amount of stanzas: Any.

--Amount of lines per stanza: Any.

--Meter: Any.

--Topic: Any.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

Are these things you want to do with all poetry? Of course not. Could you? Sure. Either kinetic or shape poetry—as with anything—can be done well or poorly. Can these techniques be used with more than just spooky poetry? As you’ve probably already guessed—absolutely.

Remember, every choice you make with your poem should be done with purpose.
