Communication is a big factor when it comes to writing. In our every day life, we communicate in many different ways and how we interpret each other can vary on a number of things. At work, I've been going to a few different stores within the company and that has meant working with different people every week. We all communicate but there are elements that vary with each person. One thing I have noticed is how our tone can affect the overall outcome. I work in retail, so we communicate with customers on a regular basis, but those interactions vary from the encouraging to even some that end up rather terrible.
While we try our best, there are situations and aspects that affect the result and one of those things with communication that has an influence that might not be a conscious effort is in tone. I've seen one or two who are even on a manager level have a terrible moment of communication with the customer due to it. The things being said made sense and in their own way, they were trying to resolve the situation. However, the tone used in their voice didn't lend a helping hand.
And even my tone, sometimes, doesn't come off how I intend. I've had some feedback where someone felt that I came off a bit know-it-all even though I don't feel like I know everything. And I know someone in my family who has that tone on a regular basis.
However, what does this have to do writing and drama?
Well, as writers we communicate and tone can be a factor. It's not always easy to see and develop our tone as a writer, but it's part of what we work on during the years we spend with the craft. Aside from what we develop on a conscious and subconscious level, tone is also something we can use with characters to make drama.
As the song by I don't remember who says, "Everybody talks." Our characters talk and they can have similar situations/problems and tonal misunderstandings. Granted, it's a little work trying to show how the voice of the character has tone versus spending too much time telling the reader, but that's all part of the process.
What tone does your character use? Is there a character who is misunderstood because they seem too standoffish, rude or maybe lacking in enthusiasm to others involved? There are options and when it comes to communication, many ways to create drama. |

How do you use a character's tone in your story?
It has been a long time since I have edited a drama newsletter. Back in April, I wrote a newsletter about stress in our lives and for the story characters. Here are the two comments sent in about the topic:

As I age, I find new stresses replace old ones. I think if we didn't have some stress in our lives, things would be very dull.

A way I cause stress is by describing negative bodily reactions to threatening people or situations. Writing can be mentally taxing and stressful when I am forced to change lots of things to make them better. Something that also causes me stress is entering the Writer's Cramp. The thousand word limit puts me in a box and the rush to complete it is also stressful sometimes. For some reason, writing in my blog/journal always relaxes me. Anyway, those are my thoughts to this discussion. Thanks for the newsletter!
