Of Snakes and Spiders

Are snakes and spiders scary?

There are so many scary things in the world that each of us has at least one or two that make us want to run and hide. Chances are, you know at least one person who is afraid of spiders. Same for snakes. Those are pretty basic fears. Spiders, first of all, look really weird when you look at them up close. Snakes surprise us because they blend into the environment until they move. Both of those species have some among them that have a venomous bite, which leads to people simply fearing all of them.

Personally, I'm not afraid of spiders or snakes although I live in Southern California where we have rattle snakes and some venomous spiders too. Why am I not afraid of them? Because I respect them. Respect and fear are not the same.

This spring, I saw a rattle snake hang out on a path I was hiking along. I noticed it from a few feet away as it slithered away from me. Instead of freaking out, running, and causing all kind of stress for the snake, I stopped where I was. The snake slithered off the path and into the bushes next to it. Once it was completely out of sight, I kept walking and kept an eye on the spot where the snake disappeared from sight. It's really easy not to get bit by a snake. Just leave it alone and don't stress it. Spiders are similar. Don't mess with it and you'll be just fine.

With that haunted month of October right around the corner, you will find many spooky and scary stories. There will be talk of ghosts and gobblins, zombies and vampires.

Spiders and snakes seem to be an all-purpose and any-season type of scary thing. But they aren't. Snakes are more active in spring (at least here in Southern California) while fall finds us ducking from giant spider webs. Decorations for Halloween often use black spiders on pumpkins, adding to the fall spider phenomenon.

As you write your scary stories for this haunted season, don't forget to add some spiders and snakes to your stories.
