Do You Have a Minute? Moment Sharing Poetry

Work this time of year is particularly draining, everyone needs something yesterday. Sometimes I can help, but other things are completely out of my hands. This frustration is as equally draining as the rush. So, on my days off I do my best to relax and have fun in between errands.

My most recent foray into this relaxation time I took some of the kids to Rainbow Springs. I went for the waterfalls located there, since I’m not really interested in the inner tubing, swimming or kayaking—at least not this day. Once we found the place, and believe me that wasn’t easy since there were three different entrances that were several miles and turns apart, we started exploring.

We walked and talked and took pictures of the waterfalls and nature. As we made our way through the park we discovered something interesting. This state park used to be an amusement park back in the 1930’s. We didn’t know that until we stumbled upon the remains of a zoo, and even then we didn’t fully know what to make of the ruins that now only held the occasional lizard or squirrel. It was eerie seeing the broken shells of exhibits. We imagined the pre- WWII visitors who once walked the brick pathways we were. It was only later, when we found a sign we had passed in the beginning that we fully understood what we walked through.

I just shared my recent adventure and why I wanted to take it. These were many of the moments of my past week. Some of the best poetry I’ve seen is a sharing of a minute in time. Take some of the fun, crazy, frustrating, enjoyable, and even boring moments and create some poetry with them.

I’m sharing a poetry form that is all about this sharing of a moment. Have fun using this or any poetry form to share your moments in time.

This form was invented by Verna Lee Hinegardner, and was created about fifty years ago. The form name is representative of the poet’s goal. “It captures a momentary mood or moment in time.” (Study and Writing of Poetry, 133).
