About This Newsletter

Hiya bards! I am back as a guest editor to share a newer form I am playing with. *Wink* If you are a math type person, or recall the Da Vinci code books, or studied a Nautilus shell or knitting patterns or Metal music by TOOL, you may recall the mathematical fibonacci series of numbers! Who knew that poetry and math could mix? *Shock2* Rare....yet..Read on...to fibbery!

Letter from the editor

I just discovered this interesting Western poem form following a math pattern called the FIB. The idea of writing using the fibbonaci series of numbers has been around for years and experimental in nature. Its current form was set and made popular in April 2006 by Gregory J. Pincus, and spread through a blog that he created. It has become a place for its development. There are now Fibs in different languages as it has become worldwide.

The form uses the mathematical fibonacci sequence in the way the syllables appear in each line.

The basic form has 6 lines with the following pattern

line 1: 1 syllable
line 2: 1 syllable
line 3: 2 syllables
line 4: 3 syllables
line 5: 5 syllables
line 6: 8 syllables

and potentially could continue on if you keep following the series

0+1=1
1+1=2
1+2=3
2+3=5
3+5=8
5+8=13
8+13=21
13+21=34

An example by Gregory Pincus:

"One
Small,
Precise,
Poetic,
Spiraling mixture:
Math plus poetry yields the Fib."

http://gottabook.blogspot.ca/2006/04/fib.html

Poets have played with it further and made longer versions and even ones where you the poem ascends and descends in syllables: as in 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 8, 5, 3,2,1, 1.

Many examples can be found at sites like: https://www.poetrysoup.com/poems/fibonacci
and it looks like as long as you follow the sequence, you can use as many lines as you want.

The Fib has been likened to haiku owing to the constraints of language and structure to convey evocative meaning. It can be quite complex and yet even children love to play with its simplicity. *Smile* It is a western form that allows for more conscious awareness of words in a precise way. And as Gregory says, it is kind of a poetry for geeks! *Laugh*

So now I am off to play with "Fibbery" And math is NOT my best thing! *Laugh* Why don't you join me and send in your FIBS for my next issue. *Wink*
