Give It Away

July 15 is National Give Something Away day. When I started this series, I thought it would be fun to celebrate the ordinary things in life, like chocolate sundaes, rainbows and unicorns. But this was a pretty thought provoking 'holiday' on the calendar. I'm not sure how these days get chosen or who does the choosing, but it's fun to look them over and read the descriptions for the holiday.

I liked this holiday because it was about being kind. The idea is about sharing and giving to others. An unselfish act of giving something away. And then you know, as usual, things get twisted. What if you could give away a moment in your life, good or bad? What if you could share minutes in your life? What if you could give away emotions like anger or fear?

What if, like the story linked below, you had seven minutes to review your entire life and decide your future after death. The ideas are endless. Could you review all the life-changing moments, or all the highlights of your life in seven minutes? The perfect exercise for a dull writing day would be to give yourself seven minutes to write what you could about your life. It would be interesting to see what you wrote...submit it to the newsletter and I'll share.

This month's question: What would you do with your seven minutes?

#178902 by RatDog Author IconMail Icon

Excerpt: You are lying on a bench, trying to keep hold of your senses. You came to Mexico City
to work on your thesis about Yaqui Indian sorcery, where a student arranged for you to
meet a local man who was supposed to be very knowledgeable on the subject. The old
man met you at a bus stop and offered you a lemon drop, now you feel as if you’ve
been drugged. The man is standing above you now, chanting gibberish and staring
deeply into your eyes.

"I know what you're up to, don't try to pull any of that mind expanding Castaneda stuff on me
with your hypnotism and drugged candy!" You exclaim, gasping for breath.

"Life is like a journey to Ixtlan, you never know what's going to happen next." He replies calmly.
