Creating Just For Fun

Sometimes when I'm surfing our community for something to read, I'll find a puzzle, survey, quiz or In and Out. If I have time - I participate in the activity and I do try to leave a review if I see something could be improved. It's a fun little thing to do and it lets members know they have people visiting their portfolio. No one likes a lonely portfolio. Once again, this is within the scheme of participation on the site. The more you participate, the more people will visit your portfolio.

"In & OutOpen in new Window. are relatively easy to create and have a lot of options for formatting your item. The instructions are there for you when you Create an Item. The hardest part is when you get to Section 6: Item Type Specific Setting. This is where you format your In and Out and determine how the page will display. If you use the In and Out for contest submissions, don't forget to require item IDs. Allowing Self Deletion is nice, this way a member can delete their post if they find a mistake. If you're not sure what a setting will do, create the item and post a few tests before making the item public. You can delete all the test posts before you open the item.

Then promote your item, plug them on the "Activities @ Writing.ComOpen in new Window. page, invite members in "Writing.Com General DiscussionOpen in new Window. or link it when greeting newbies over on the "Noticing NewbiesOpen in new Window. page. Think about using In and Outs as a billboard for your group, posting announcements or letting members promote within your group. And don't forget, if you respond to this newsletter, you can add an item for editors to consider featuring.

So next time you're working on items for your group or for the community in general, think beyond the standard static item and message forum, and see what other fun things you can create.

This month's question: How do you use In and Outs? What other fun items have you tried? Send in your answer and links below! *Down* Editors love feedback!

Last month's question: What are your goals for the upcoming year?

Cadie Laine - gobble, gobble Author Icon responded: I honestly don't know if I will have any specific goals this year. I know I would like to continue to read and write. I want to write more on a regular basis of prompts and getting my imagination going again. Than to focus on something like my long stories. We shall see what the new year brings.

Elfin Dragon-finally published Author Icon replied: Goals for the upcoming new year???? Write more, write more, write more. *Laugh*

Lesley Scott Author Icon answered: This newsletter was helpful. I don't know how to hold a contest. It is encouraging and made me want to try it sometime.

Elizabeth Author Icon listed: I am a goal setter, and my goals just generally line up with the year, rather than being new year's resolutions in the traditional sense. I set goals for everything, but here are my goals for writing for 2017:

Write at least one blog post per week
Finish writing my novel from NaNo 2016
Write at least one short story per month
Write at least one poem per month
Write at least twenty-five reviews on Goodreads
Write at least twenty-five reviews on WDC
Enter WDC contests at least six times throughout the year
Start a new novel for NaNoWriMo
