“It's like everyone tells a story about themselves inside their own head. Always. All the time. That story makes you what you are. We build ourselves out of that story.”
― Patrick Rothfuss, The Name of the Wind
“Stories you read when you're the right age never quite leave you. You may forget who wrote them or what the story was called. Sometimes you'll forget precisely what happened, but if a story touches you it will stay with you, haunting the places in your mind that you rarely ever visit.”
― Neil Gaiman, M Is for Magic
“There are books full of great writing that don't have very good stories. Read sometimes for the story... don't be like the book-snobs who won't do that. Read sometimes for the words--the language. Don't be like the play-it-safers who won't do that. But when you find a book that has both a good story and good words, treasure that book.”

Your words can transport your readers into other world, dimensions, or keep them right where they are, in the comfort of your story. Your challenge is to decide where you'd like to take them on a journey.
Short stories are glimpses of characters' lives, a moment in time we get to see and explore. There's no rhyme or reason for them, no real beginning and not a specific end. Only the journey matters. Write it as if you mean it. You're the creator, you are the one who sees the characters and knows their story. Tell it and share it with others.
It can be tough sitting down and writing a short story. Picking out specific characters and a good setting even more so. When you incorporate the word limitation on those, it could turn into a possible disaster. Restrictions do tend to limit your imagination, but they do play an important role down the road.
Challenge is, writing a short story of 75 words, or 500 words and making it spectacular, catchy, interesting. Not every writer manages to pull it off. As a writer, you don't like to be bound by chains, holding your imagination and writing ability in place. The need to break those chains is enormous, but it can be deceiving. Creating longer stories doesn't mean your creating something better. It only means that you don't like to be restricted. Yet, daring yourself to at least try and shorten your piece can be quite fun.
A single moment, a few sentences and you've captured the perfect tale! It's a glimpse of a conversation, a funny mishap, an opening to a bigger and better story to come. Understand that a limitation could create further inspiration. Not every short story will turn into a novel, but the possibility is always there. You just have to dare yourself to try something new.
'Til next time!
