The true secret of happiness lies in taking a genuine interest in all the details of daily life.~~William Morris
It's the little details that are vital. Little things make big things happen.~~John Wooden
Every man's life ends the same way. It is only the details of how he lived and how he died that distinguish one man from another.~~Ernest Hemingway
A mountain is composed of tiny grains of earth. The ocean is made up of tiny drops of water. Even so, life is but an endless series of little details, actions, speeches, and thoughts. And the consequences whether good or bad of even the least of them are far-reaching.~~Swami Sivananda

One of the biggest mistakes writers can make is they tend to only write about the momentous things in life: the big deal job, the huge move, the birth or death of a loved one, the loss of a pet or the graduations. Worth writing about? Absolutely, but, equally, so are the little, day to day, minute things that link humanity together. Little things.
For eighteen years, I had to tell my son to pick up the wet towel off the bathroom floor and hang it on the towel rack. Long off on his own now and living a thousand miles away, every once in a while what I wouldn't give to walk into the bathroom and see his towel lying in a sodden lump on the floor. It would mean he was here, in reach. Doesn't matter that I am quite sure he doesn't still do that. It is one of the little details that bring back a memory. Little things.
My dad used to always have a couple of Hershey's Kisses in his jacket pocket. He'd offer one every now and again for a job well done, while fixing up a scraped knee or after a dad/daughter talk when one of those 'chats' needed to happen. Those Hershey's Kisses meant love, affection, knowledge, and more, the knowing that dad was always here for me. I remember finding one of his old jackets my mom had kept after my dad passed away. Couldn't resist hugging it and then putting it on. In the pocket, I found a fifteen-year-old, half-melted, silvery kiss. Little things.
My husband and I leave each other what we call 'haphazard notes.' Short little notes placed to be found sometime or another. Perhaps in a lunch made for work or slipped into a favorite book. There's one tucked into his knife set that he will find the next time he gets a deer. Today, I found one waiting for me propped on the steering wheel of my car, letting me know he'd filled the tank and put on new wiper blades. It had a p.s. too...it made me smile! Little things.
My friend always gives her hubby a hard time about snoring. We commiserate over night-noises. One thing I always keep in mind...there may come a day when the night is deathly quiet ... and what I will give then, to be awakened by him clearing the north-west forty in his sleep! Little things.
When sis comes to visit, she always brings us canisters of coffee. Beyond the elixir of life, coffee means home and family and bunches of us sitting around the table yacking for hours. Coffee, a little thing, but says love. Just like it does when my hubby brings me a cup when I am huddled over my keyboard, clacking away at a newsletter ...as he just did! Little things.
Little things. Little details. Big differences in writing!
