Letter from the editor

Sometimes we forget the most courteous part of this site. Replying to the reviews of our work. You can feel bad about it and tell yourself that you'll get to them eventually, but the best thing to do would be to find some time and reply to them. It is that simple but we writers like to procrastinate a lot. *Wink*

When you check out the side tab with various links and click on Writing.com Tools, a pop up list will appear with about a dozen choices. At the top, it'll say Writing.com 101. Clicking on it will take you to "Writing.Com 101Open in new Window.. In that book you can find anything you need or are looking for. For this newsletter I chose Rating & Reviewing just so I can make you aware of a few things. When I clicked on my chosen subject, it dropped me down to the following:

RATING AND REVIEWING
An integral part of this writing community, rating and reviewing the items you read is very important and it benefits everyone involved!

Are you still with me? Good. That is one of the most important things on this site! Let's get to reviewing then, shall we? *Wink* Wait! Let's look at Guidelines To Great Reviewing and the Six Key Characteristics For Reviews:

*BulletB* Be honest
*BulletB* Be encouraging
*BulletB* Be respectful
*BulletB* Be well rounded
*BulletB* Match the rating
*BulletB* Be visually appealing and easy to understand

As long as you as a reviewer follow the above mentioned steps, you've done your job. You should write reviews you're proud of. The type of reviews you'd like to receive. That's also one side of the fence.

Being the receiver of those said reviews and replying to them is the other side of that shaky fence. While there is a link on how to deal with negative reviews and comments, I'd like to expand on that a bit. We all agree that this site is very diverse and I don't mean our writing. People from all over the world are members; different backgrounds, different culture, different ages!

When you receive a review, be courteous in your reply. You may not know the other person at all. The age difference sets you apart as well. Watch the language you use when you decide to sit down and type up those words. The person on the other end of that line may be a very young teenager but they managed to review your item because of it's rating. Don't just assume that this site is for adults only. A lot of parents monitor their child's involvement here, but even they don't know a person's age simply by their writing.

If the review is rather mean, the best thing to do would be not to reply at all. When I say mean, I don't mean that they dissected your written piece and tried to help, but weren't all polite about it, I mean, they were downright mean and had nothing helpful or nice to say. Condescending reviews!

You'll get short reviews, praise only reviews, fluff reviews (my favorite! *Angelic*), short or long reviews, and then there are the helpful ones and those which tear at your heart with each word you read but still help. *Skull* Those are good reviews even if it's hard to take them. Just remember that the person who did send a review took the time out of their their day to read your item and share their two cents with you. Don't hold it against them. Understand where they're coming from. If they themselves have misspelled words and such in their review of their item, don't judge them either. English may not be their first language.

One last thing, please, check your rating of your items. If you don't wish to have them reviewed, set them to private. If they're published pieces, setting them to Comments Only may be the best solution if you are that keen on having them be visible to all. Don't judge another person's opinion. They are entitled to it, just like you.

'til next time!
