Let Freedom Ring with Poetry



Small seeds of flame burst open and bloom in the night sky. Speakers around the fairgrounds echo out Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the USA” as the hairs on my arm stand at attention. The crowd reacts with an obligatory “ooooh.”

July 4th is when the United States celebrates our independence. This month I’ve chosen a couple of poetry forms that remind me of America and freedom.


Licentia Rhyme Form

In Latin, Licentia means freedom or liberty—to the point of boldness.


BRIEF HISTORY

The Licentia Rhyme Form is a newer poetry form. It was invented by Laura Lamarca, a poet from the UK.


MUST HAVES

--At least 3 stanzas.
--Each stanza must have 12 lines.
--Each line has 11 syllables.
--Must use this rhyme scheme & line repetition:

--Any length.
--Any topic/theme.

This is another newer form that was created by Dennis L. Dean.


MUST HAVES

--No rhyme.
--3 lines.
--Syllabic. The lines must have the following syllables: 7, 6 and 7.
--Topic/theme: must mention a bug. If you want to really work your poetic license you could take the topic to something that bugs you.


COULD HAVES or WHAT IS THE POET’S CHOICE IN ALL THIS?

--Nothing I read about this form indicates a limit in stanzas, so consider this poet’s choice.
