The Jackalope is the quintessential American myth. It was supposedly created by two brothers, who were taxidermist, living in Wyoming in the 1930s. According to the story they were hunting rabbits when they took their catch home one of them tossed a rabbit into their cabin and it landed by a set of antlers. They decided to use their art to merge the two creatures into the Jackalope. There are other stories about there being similar creatures or myths in Europe, but I am going to focus on the American myth of the Jackalope in this newsletter.

There are numerous stories about this fascinating creature. It is said that the Jackalope can mimic human speech, that they mate during lightning storms, and that they can run or is that hop at 90 miles per hour. While most people (myself being one) think these creatures are myths, other people say they Colorado, Nebraska, New Mexico, and Wyoming. There is also a story that John Colter, one of the first white men to enter Colorado had an encounter with one of these vicious beasts.

If you want to see a statue of this warrior rabbit, as Jackalopes are also know, you can go to Douglas, Wyoming. Douglas hosts a Jackalope day sometime in June, you can even get a hunting licenses to hunt this rare and endangered creature. The hunting season is extremely short because it occurs on June 31 (no that is not a mistake) between 12:00 AM and 2:00 AM.

The challenge for the next newsletter is to write a story about a Jackalope or Sasquatch in 1,000 words or less. For links to research the Jackalope see "Invalid EntryOpen in new Window.. The deadline is Wednesday, June 8, 2016, if there are more then five entries the best story will receive an Awardicon.
