Letter from the editor

Wow. It's only a little over a week before Christmas. Time has been going by so fast this year.

I remember time going by much more slowly when I was a child, waiting for holiday break and Christmas to come. It was like that Madonna song, "Time goes by... so slowly... so slowly..." only without the unnecessary display of her half-naked butt.

I would be so excited for Christmas morning, and anticipating all of the gifts under the tree, that I wouldn't be able to go to sleep Christmas Eve night. I would lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, hoping to hear Santa's sleigh on the roof of our house. The next morning, I would awaken to find all kinds of gifts under the tree, where there weren't any the night before. The milk and cookies we had left for Santa would be gone.

These days, I can barely keep my eyes open past 10 pm. I'll now have to stay up so I can play the same Santa tricks on my son. Christmas morning, all of his presents will have magically appeared overnight. The milk and cookies will be gone. I get to play Santa, and it's the only time all year that my husband gets to eat cookies without my yelling at him.

Just don't ask me to bake the Christmas cookies or make any fudge. That could lead to a disastrous situation involving possibly injury of myself and glass pots. It's happened before, and it's likely to happen again. But that's another story, that I'll leave for another newsletter!

Holidays experiences always have the possibility for comedy. Do you have an experience to share with us?

Ask & Answer

Great job, Mel, another fabulous addition to the Comedy Newsletter. I read an wonderful article in the December issue of the Writer's Digest about word play. In it they quote Neil Simon's play The Sunshine Boys: "Words with a 'k' in them are funny. Alka Seltzer gets a laugh--cupcake is funny. Tomato is not funny. Cookie is funny. Cucumber is funny. Cleaveland is funny. Maryland is not funny. Chicken gets a laugh as well as, pickle. 'K' words are funny!"
