About This Newsletter

Fantasy Newsletter by Elf

Even this Elf doesn't get to every book or series and there are a number of ones I haven't read yet that surprise many people. A small ramble about those books and the usefulness of reading, and permission to skip some books for this newsletter.

Letter from the editor

Reading is important for writers, as has been stated a number of times in blogs, podcasts, around the site and in newsletters too. We all know how great reading is in general. On top of that, there are certain books within the genre that are well known where even non-writers get surprised if they find out you haven't read them.

So confession time: It's true, I still haven't read Harry Potter. I also haven't read Lord of the Rings. I tried reading the Hobbit back in my freshman year of high school and just couldn't do it. On top of the list includes most of Hunger Games (I've read one book so far), Game of Thrones, The Sword of Shannara, and most of Wheel of Time (though I have a goal to read them all some day). That's just the series that come to the top of my head. There are so many books I have not read.

And guess what... It's okay.

Yep, I say it's okay to not have read some books but I do have some reasoning behind making the claim. If you think about it, there are so many books and series already with more to come in the near and distant future. That's not even counting self-published as there are books published every day really, if you do the math. Many in just speculative fiction (and other genres too) to the point it would be near impossible to be reading them all and getting other things done.

There are some books that become iconic within a genre. Yes, it can be a good idea to read them. However, it's not the end of the world or anything really terrible if there are some you never read.

I still recommend reading. I have a long list of "to-read" books on Goodreads along with some that I remember on occasion but haven't officially added to the list yet. I own a number of the books though many are still on the need to purchase in the future list. While I do think it's okay to not always read the big names, I am also always going to advocate reading because it's very helpful for writers.

Which means I should be reading (and writing). You too. *Wink*

Ask & Answer

Are there any big name books or series that you haven't read yet?

Last month for my fantasy newsletter, I discussed getting ideas from RPG and people who are really into RPG. Here is the comment sent in on the topic through the system (a couple emailed me but to get in newsletter it helps to follow the link provided in the newsletters):

If you are into writing high Fantasy with magic and the like, Fantasy RPG's can be amazing. Even if you aren't into magic and such, there are modern RPG's that use modern times and such.
I use characters from an RPG that I ran in my stuff. I did all the stuff when I was running the game so when it came to write, all I had to tell the stories.

If you like RPing, games are awesome. If not, give it a try. It HAS to be more fun then that friend asking you to that Zumba class lol

- hehe. Though I actually like Zumba. *Wink*
