About This Newsletter

Each person is an enigma. You're a puzzle not only to yourself but also to everyone else, and the great mystery of our time is how we penetrate this puzzle.
~ Theodore Zeldin

I have come to believe that the whole world is an enigma, a harmless enigma that is made terrible by our own mad attempt to interpret it as though it had an underlying truth.
~ Umberto Eco

The artist needs to understand the truth that lies at the bottom of an enigma.

Letter from the editor

Some people and certain things will forever be an enigma to us. Whether or not we know them directly or indirectly, their behavior will always come with more questions than answers. Truth be told, one can never know a person entirely, even if spend years with them. We know what we are allowed to see, glimpses of their soul, but not everything. Not their deepest and darkest thoughts - unless that's just how a person is.

Characters like that can be quite a challenge to write about. Being able to surprise not only the characters around them but also the reader isn't an easy task. Shocking revelations are hard to come by in this day and age, but a person itself can be hard to understand. Writing about them has to be consistent, without too much changes, in order to keep a reader entertained instead of having them get frustrated.

There are many books out there where the main character can contradict itself. They have many faces, but also hide a lot from others and reveal their personalities at specific times only for the reader to stop mid-sentence and reconsider the entire story at that particular spot. Their beliefs or lack thereof will play a huge part it who they are and what makes them tick. Relating to a person such as that can be hard at times but if you as a writer stay on track and don't reveal a major change in a character in the middle of a book, you should be good to go. Subtlety is important.

Have you written about an enigmatic character where the reader questions their motive and everything else they've read until that particular point? I'm really curious.

'til next time!
