Letter from the editor

The most dangerous enemy is one who has no fear. Imagine fighting someone who gives no thought to the possibility of being injured or even their own death. A completely fearless character could make a formidable villain for a horror story. Here are some reasons a character might become fearless:

Nothing to lose: Maybe he already knows he is dying and is wants to go out fighting instead of wasting away in a hospital bed. Or maybe his family and everything else he cared about are already gone.

Immortality: The character may be a god or some other being that cannot die. In order to fight them, your characters may need to find a way to overcome their immortality.

Magic: The character may be protected by a magic charm or spell that keeps them from harm. Fighting this character might require magic of your own.

Cannot be caught: Maybe the character has super speed or is able to teleport. In spite of their small size, hummingbirds are fearless, because they are very difficult to catch. While a hummingbird might not seem frightening, imagine a human with the same abilities.

No emotion: The character may have a mental illness that keeps him from feeling emotions such as fear. Or he may be an alien or robot who does not have the same emotions as humans.

Good actor: Maybe the character only seems fearless. Some people are quite convincing actors, especially when they are desperate. When dealing with this character, other characters will need to find a way to learn his true fears and exploit them.

Something to try: Write a horror story in which the villain is fearless.
