Letter from the editor

After the events of the last week, it is somewhat difficult to write a Drama Newsletter. How can I write about sadness and tragedy, when out there in the world there are families and friends mourning the loved ones they lost due to acts of terrorism? People who were out for a meal, watching a concert... enjoying their lives, oblivious to the fact that others planning to do what they did?

Instead, I want to write about courage and kindness. Because whenever bad things like this happen, there are people who are brave, and there are people who are kind, and it is good to remember that.

Those are the people who opened their doors to strangers in Paris, offering them a safe place to hide and even stay for the night. Not just in Paris, either – there were people who offered shelter to those who were unable to return to Paris.

During the attack in Australia, there were those who offered to sit with people on public transport – people who were afraid to travel. This may sound like a small thing, but it was an act of kindness and compassion that showed to me that there is good in the world.

I never underestimate the courage of police, of firemen, of doctors and nurses and ambulance crews, and all those who put their lives on the line to help and protect others. But courage is not limited to them. Whenever disaster strikes, there are people who reach out a hand and, effectively, say, “I will look after you.”

They are people who see an accident and collectively lift a bus off a person. People who see someone struggling in the water and swim to the rescue. Even the people who see someone in need and ring the professionals, because not everyone does – sometimes need is ignored, or it is thought that someone else will have done something about it. The bystander effect.

Courage and kindness cannot and should not be underestimated. They make a difference, every day, around the world. They save lives, bring hope, offer compassion. They tell us that all isn't lost, because humans are capable not just of terrible deeds, but of beautiful ones, as well.

It is easy to despair. Watching the news can be depressing, because there is hardly ever anything good to be found. Unfortunately, it is the bad that sells. That does not mean that there isn't plenty of good. It's just less visible. Until it's needed. Until those doors open, offering shelter and safety. So, let us praise that quiet heroism.
