About This Newsletter

QUOTE: “I don’t want to live – I want to love first, and live incidentally.” – Zelda Fitzgerald.

Happy Veterans Day! Being a veteran myself, I like to theme my November romance/love newsletter with a look at the military and how romance softens the hearts of the men and women who fight for their country. I served from 1986-1997 in the US Army, motivated to join by a sense of patriotism stirred in my heart by Ronald Reagan. It’s not easy sacrificing your civilian life for your nation and so for those who have served in the armed forces everywhere: Thank you for your service.

A romantic image with a military theme.

Letter from the editor

I struggled for an idea or concept to explore. Should I talk about the chemistry or lack of it on the new show, “Supergirl?” Discuss the power of love letters? Talk about the qualities we admire in our romantic military heroes? Ultimately, I settled on all of the above!

The military romance first saw commercial success in 1983 with Lindsay McKenna’s novel, “Captive of Fire,” but military romances go back to the Civil War and even further. There was a mini series in the mid-1980’s called “North and South” about 2 friends who fought for the Union and Confederacy. The inherent romantic conflict was built on the conflict surrounding the war. Who was right? Was falling in love with the enemy wrong?

World War II Romance takes on the same issues. Can a German soldier fall in love with a Jewish girl? Can she fall in love with him?

Today’s military romances are filled with SEALs, heroes of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

Military heroes know what sacrifice is, have seen suffering, and focus on duty. They’re loyal, honorable, and dedicated.

Inherent romantic conflict can include:
Separation from loved ones
Loss of friends (North and South)
Falling in love with the enemy

Given the intensity of the conflict, our heroes display incredible emotional depth.

And not just men fight for truth, justice and duty. Women do, too.

I’m so excited to watch the new Supergirl show. It’s been a while since Linda Carter’s “Wonder Woman” inspired us. Melissa Benoist is very believable as Kara Danvers/Supergirl and I’m definitely rooting for her. She embodies all the qualities that we find in military heroes.

Only she has ZERO chemistry with the actor who plays Jimmy Olsen. That leaves us with Winn. There’s a spark there, but there’s got to be twist. Is Winn the enemy? Or do you see a park with Jimmy and I don't?

Thank a hero today – even if it’s just with a smile. I often find the smallest thanks lingers the longest.
