"A good poem creates a world that somehow touches the reader. That world is built of images that come to the reader through vivid sense details and the music of vivacious language."

Paul Janeczko

Curses, Charms, and more—Oh my! Halloween-y Poetry Forms

It’s coming up to the spooky time of year again. October 31st in the US is time for the magic of dressing up, ghost stories, etc. I’ve dug around looking for some poetry that befits this time of year.

Each of the forms I’ll share with you today is a genre’ form. If you missed the newsletter that went over genre’ forms, here’s more information on that: http://www.writing.com/main/newsletters/action/archives/id/6470-Poetic-Stanzas-G...

The Curse Poetry Form

This genre’ form can be only a part or section of a larger poem, or the entire poem. Curse’s, by their very nature, are not nice things. Usually it’s the verbal desire of something bad befalling someone or something.

MUST HAVES

--Topic: A part or the entire poem must be a curse of some sort against someone, and/or something.

COULD HAVES or WHAT IS THE POET’S CHOICE IN ALL THIS?

--Line count is up to you or dependent on the form you choose, if one is selected.
--Meter: Your choice, or dependent on the form.
--Number of stanzas: Your choice, or dependent on the form, if one chosen.
--Rhyme or not, it’s up to you, or dependent on the form.

The Charm or Incantation Poetry Form

A charm is similar to a curse, except it tends to be less evil—more white magic than dark, although it could go either way depending on the intent behind it.

MUST HAVES

--Topic: Must be a charm/incantation of some sort.

COULD HAVES or WHAT IS THE POET’S CHOICE IN ALL THIS?

--Line count is up to you or dependent on the form you choose, if one is selected.
--Meter: Your choice, or dependent on the form.
--Number of stanzas: Your choice, or dependent on the form, if chosen.
--Rhyme or not, it’s up to you, or dependent on the form.

Cautionary Verse Poetry Form

Cautionary verse is a warning in poetry form.
.

MUST HAVES

--Topic: Must contain a warning.
