Gearing Up
I don't have a particular topic for this month's newsletter, but would like to mention a few upcoming and ongoing things in our community. As we head into a busier season on Writing.com, I'd like to touch on a few reminders.
Support our site! Take a few extra bucks and buy a membership or a cool branded item in the "The Writing.Com Shop" . A little bit goes a long way to helping support the site and budding authors.
Get active! Whether you enter the site contests, help run an activity or host a contest yourself, jump in and give it a try. This community is what you make of it, if you don't participate, don't expect people to come flocking to your portfolio. This includes keywording your public items so searches bring new members to our community. And hey, take a few seconds to promote WDC on Facebook, Twitter and blogs if you have those accounts.
Mentor a newbie! I was so lost when I first found this site and was actually too chicken to join for a few months. I finally got the nerve up to make an account and was so pleased to find such a friendly group here to greet me. Pay it forward, friends.
Take the time to say thank you! I know we're all busy, I'm crazy busy myself, but take just a little moment to say thank you...to reviewers, to people that say hello or comment in your portfolio. Those little words mean so much.
Educate yourself! If you are curious about something, go out there and find out more. It's not like you have to get in the car, go to the library, pull down a giant encyclopedia and search for it! The more you learn, the more creative you become. The more creative you are, the more you share with your fellow humans. Or...
Psst! WDC's birthday is just around the corner with a bucketload of contests, activities and prizes available to win. Don't miss the boat --- stop in WDC in the beginning of September. I want faces in here, people! Okay...browsers. You know what I meant.
This month's question: What activity or contest are you trying to help promote? Send in your answer below! Editors love feedback!

A 30-day, prompt-driven, intense poetry contest that requires you to write a new qualifying poem EVERY day (or almost) to win! You may not enter previously written poems. (See information under "Judging" for more information on scoring.) It may also be used as a way to personally challenge yourself to write everyday if you need the motivation. Due to the number of writing prompts, an Upgraded membership or above is required to officially participate, as you will need to create a book or folder to house your poetry.

Our goal is to unite like minded writers in the WDC community. We want to showcase contests related to speculative fiction in hopes to encourage you to write.
Any member of WDC who is interested in broadening their writing into multiple genres will be able to join this group. You will have the option to browse through all the groups affiliated, you can join the groups that interest you, or simply sit back and wait for our monthly email notifications for events that peak your interest

Excerpt: Do you have a funny anecdote? Sure, we all do! Tons and tons of those red-in-the-face, never-live-this-down kinda stories that have friends and family alike ROTFLing. Think your anecdote is funny enough to win prizes? I LOVE to laugh - its nature's own remedy for what ails ya. I can't help but find myself sometimes thinking back at some embarassing thing I did, and I laugh til I can't breathe. Yeah, I get some weird looks, but hey, they are just the makings of another hilarious anecdote!
Excerpt: This is a monthly fiction writing contest, accepting stories or epics (long narrative poems). I have a son who is obsessed with mythical creatures, and we have books and books on them at home. There are a lot more out there than you might think! Also, there is so much potential with a mythical creature-based story or epic, because you're not restricted to science but can allow your imagination to soar. Every month will feature a different mythical creature. I promise not to repeat a creature within 12 months.

Excerpt: This is a supernatural short story writing contest, so please keep it in the genre. Three pictures will be listed below, simply pick the picture that interest you the most, and write about it. There is also a bonus written prompt each month. You can use the bonus by itself or combine it with another prompt.
Excerpt: This contest uses only spoken words or internal dialogue!
All you have to do is finish the line with the funniest response you can think of. Traditionally, there are choices offered (white cards) but here you'll have to come up with the response yourself. Your reply has to be longer than 2 words and lesser than 15. Remember to have fun with this and be creative.
Excerpt: Authors on Writing.Com are looking for good, useful feedback... and of course, exposure within Writing.Com. You can do a good deed by reviewing any qualifying item* on Writing.Com and you might win! Enter as many times as you want to increase your odds of being selected as a prize winner!

This month's question: What activity or contest are you trying to help promote?
Last month's question: What are some good ideas to help new members?
S Ferguson~ Prepping for Prep comments: I am always checking in either in the morning when I drink my coffee or after dinner when things are settling down. Summer is my favorite time but it has been raining a lot and hasn't been overly hot. I love my WDC family and would never forget about them.
Mary Ann MCPhedran says: Thank you for the news letter I will be writing every day as I'm retired and don't sit out in the sun. I hope you can get out in the sunshine and have a break thanks for sharing this news letter.
Elfin Dragon-finally published tells us: I like to try and welcome a new member when I see one. Let them know they can always ask for help when needed. And definitely to feel free to browse the site and have fun with the contests. Also where to look if they have problems with the Writing ML. I know that's what I had trouble with the most when I came aboard. But mostly just hello.
