Building Your Bio Block
So many of us "set it and forget it" when it comes to our bio blocks.
I am guilty! I set my bio block quite some time ago, and I am really bad about making sure it stays updated. There used to be just one informational block, and a few years ago our great leader made a bigger one with more detail. It is awesome, and I absolutely love it, but I am really bad about updating it.
It's much like the dishes, I put it off. Not because I don't want to do it (unlike dishes - I don't want to do them), but because I don't know what to say. Filling those out, for me, is pretty nerve-wracking.
Is it interesting? Is it boring? Does it make sense? Do I want to reveal that about myself? What if I like EVERYTHING, and I can't pick a favorite? What if my favorite food changes every week? Do I like that picture?
I swear, it's like a dating site thing, except I've never filled one of those out, and I'm not looking for a date.
Ultimately, there are a few important things we should remember about our bio blocks - on here AND elsewhere.
If you don't feel comfortable posting it, don't. There are lots of questions that are available in the bio block. Only answer those you wish to answer. And only with the answers you are comfortable giving. And you don't have to be all-inclusive, either. If you want to just give a few things when you have a list of 547 favorites, that is ok.
Put things in there that don't change much. If you are bad at updating, like me, fill in your bio with things that don't change often. That way, less necessity to update. Instead of needing to do it often to keep things correct, you can add something clever in when you think of it.
Don't forget the picture. I think my favorite part of other people's bio blocks is the picture. For me, it doesn't even have to be a picture of you. I think the pictures add a nice little bit to show some personality. They are fun! You don't have to be in them, but your picture can still show something about you.
Don't forget to set some recommended items. Whether they be yours or a friend's, show new visitors to your portfolio some of your favorite stories or groups.
If you haven't made your bio yet, take the plunge! If you have made it, have you updated it recently and taken a look at what's there? I hope you do! |

In answer to my last newsletter, "Noticing Newbies Newsletter (April 22, 2015)" , K.H.Engl wrote, "This is very timely as I attended a poetry reading by Bea O'Brien today. (If you are unfamiliar with her work her latest chapbook is entitled "Embers.") She lead a workshop afterwards in which she directed us to free write for 5 minutes and then had us share our results. That one paragraph, or 5 minutes a day, could end up being your novel by the end of a year or so. She told us this is how John Grisham starting out writing his novel "The Firm." Bea is 94 years old and a wonderful talent!"
And now I am jealous! That sounds like such fun. |
