Letter from the editor

Ever read a story where you can laugh and feel a shiver going up and down your spine at the same time?

When a story slips too much from reality it becomes less believable, but if you combine the real world with a hint of twisted laughter which borders more on horror rather than funny, then you've got the right thing going on. Life in itself can be sheer terror. Why not use it as a writing tool?

The question is, why can the reader relate to a character in a horror story? Were they in the same situation before? Have they had experience with such things? Are they a serial killer? Let's hope not. Still, for some strange reason anyone who can make some kind of a connection with the protagonist (victim) will feel that tingle and look behind their shoulder to make sure the worst isn't following them.

It has little to do with relating to the character when it comes to a particular situation. It's the bond they get with them. That is your main focus when writing. Once you have that, instilling fear into your reader becomes much easier, but not the end of your hard work.

There is nothing better than making your reader sleep with the light on or one eye open after they read your story. The longer and more detailed it is, the better. There are a lot of horror writers out there, but not everyone's story makes your skin crawl.

What are the best scary/funny moments in your writing endeavor? If you haven't reached that moment yet, what about other writers? How do they inspire you to follow suit and why?

'til next time!
~ Gaby *Witchhat*
