Since it's February again, and I can't seem to ever get the hang of February, I'm going to be lazy this time.
Back in December, in my pre-holiday newsletter "Song Parodies" , I highlighted the only holiday songs worth listening to: parodies. But of course, most funny songs aren't season-dependent. So instead of a long, highly amusing editorial this month, here are some funny things others have done... with music.
(One slight warning: I'm not going to guarantee that any of these links are child-friendly.)
We'll start with the all-time genius of musical comedy, Tom Lehrer:

Fast forward to a more contemporary duo, Tenacious D:

Bill Bailey, live:

And then back to the classics, the Man in Black himself:

No list of musical comedians would be complete without Tim Minchin:

Marisa Berenson and the Muppets doing Shel Silverstein:

And of course, the incomparable King of Parody himself, Weird Al:

Now I'm off to drink enough to forget the rest of February. At least I'll have good music for company. |

Last time, in "Comedy Newsletter (January 14, 2015)" , I talked about the Charlie Hebdo attack and the necessity for freedom of speech.
blunderbuss: Hi Robert! Thanks for the gutsy newsletter. Can't think you will be picked up on here though. Fingers crossed. Isn't that considered superstitious blasphemy or apostasy somewhere ..... OMG!
Did you know that, historically, pictures of the prophet were revered? It's just a modern thing someone invented that prohibits it today. In my opinion, all religious conventions may be applied to those in that faith, providing they do not contravene the laws of the country said religious are living in. Anyone outside their faith doesn't have to follow those conventions, too! We used to call it religious toleration.
The intersection of free speech and free religion would be an interesting discussion - though probably not in the Comedy newsletter, unless I somehow figure out how to write satire.
Steve adding writing to ntbk. : Thank you for featuring Horseshoe Mania in your newsletter. Was not aware there was a comedy newsletter in the WdC.
In my 6 years in the WdC I have learned much. One of which is giving back = comedy is a great way of doing that, because when you can make one person laugh, you are changing their lives. To that end I seek to make one person laugh at the Walgreen's I work at as a Cashier. I am grateful to say I accomplish that goal every day I work. I am also giving back to others on the site with the raffle I highlighted here. When one is in need, he/she usually reaches out for help. There needs to be someone there to help them when the time comes. The groups here in the WdC are greatly adept at giving back to people here in the WdC. The Raffle I highlighted is going to help so many people, and it all starts with 1 person asking for a single ticket.

Hopefully the person you make laugh isn't your boss when you mess something up.
Quick-Quill : I'm sorry the charlie place was bombed. I feel bad they were punished for free speech, but they were warned and they continued. What did they expect from Islam terrorists? Did you really think Gitmo has oyster serving waiters?
On the other hand Our Gov will put the average citizen in jail and take all their worldly goods for non-pament of taxes but Some people are given a free pass for their lack of payment. There is no free ride in the USA
Life is, indeed, manifestly unfair. That's why there's comedy.
And that's it for me for February - see you next time! Until then,
