Letter from the editor

I love reading and writing horror stories. I started reading them as a child and despite the fact that I am terrified when I read them, I simply cannot stop myself. The best stories build tension as the climax approaches to the point that I must put the book down and walk away for fear of what is to come. Those that scare me the most, and hence the ones I enjoy the most, are tales that I can see happening in reality.

Advances in technology are happening so fast that it is easier than ever to imagine the horror of technology gone wrong. Novels like Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton, while unbelievable years ago, have a ring of truth and possibility with the current advances in scientific study. As I use technology in my everyday life, I think about how I could add a horrific twist. Some of the recent possibilities that popped into my head are:

*Bulletb* Mind Control Using Mobile Phones
*Bulletb* Household Robots Taken Over by Terrorists
*Bulletb* Microwaves Vaporizing People - Targeted Assassination
*Bulletb* Transporter Sending Travelers to the Wrong Place

Somehow the thought of technology being used for nefarious purposes or even accidentally going haywire with a horrific result is more terrifying to me than vampires, werewolves or other assorted monsters. While I love reading techno-horror stories, I have a hard time finding them on Writing.Com. Perhaps it's that the overwhelming attraction to monsters and supernatural forces is too difficult to ignore and so members don't have time to write horror stories with a technological bend. Or perhaps members are writing the stories, but they just aren't listing them in the horror/scary genre so I don't find them as often as the other horror stories.

Whatever the case, I've decided to create a contest to entice members to write something that I enjoy reading. So if you have time, and the inclination, check out:
