Getting To Know Each Other

Getting to know you and you getting to know us takes time. Give us a chance to learn what you want to accomplish with your writing. Tell us. Do you hope to be published? Are you writing to heal? Maybe you don't know yet; you're just writing for you, but you want to learn as much as you can.

Are you receiving the kind of feedback you hoped for when you joined the site? I've noticed some of you expected thorough critiques and are dissappointed.

I've been frustrated by reviews of my work that offer no constructive criticism, only a compliment and five stars

Don't become frustrated! If you want a certain kind of review, post on the many review forums and ask. You can post on more than one forum at a time. Reviewers search those forums daily for items to read. You are more apt to get a thorough review from a review forum than from the newbie list, though they come from there too.

A member who has been on the site less then 31 days will have their work automatically placed on the new members list. Many will read from that list to welcome you. Some of the reviews you receive will be gentler because you are new to the site and we don't want to scare you off. *Smile*

It never occurred to me that because I'm new here my postings might be treated more delicately than other author's work.

This is the forum I recommend highly for honest, constructive comments.

I've noticed others who have received thorough reviews they didn't want nor expect. They become very upset and that in turn upsets the reviewer. There are many articles written from the viewpoints of both upset writers and upset reviewers. If your work is in your port and rateable, it will be read and reviewed.

If you don't want to be corrected in a review, say so at the top of the item. The trouble is, by the time a new member knows he doesn't want to be corrected, it's too late. He has been and he didn't like it. That is the time to edit your work and place a note at the top. You could also make the item unrateable. It can still be read but can't be rated.

Excerpt taken from "About Writing.ComOpen in new Window.

Writers of all skill levels are able to get a feel for their own style and how readers truly react to it. With the Writing.Com rating system, authors no longer have to rely on friends and family alone for encouragement and criticism. After reading an item, registered members have the ability to rate and review any rateable item; thereby, giving the author a completely unbiased opinion. If a writer would like to simply showcase an item without receiving feedback, that is also an option.

The constant exposure to opinion and constructive criticism can increase the quality of an Author’s writing on a daily basis. Authors will also find that reading and reviewing other members' items may further their own writing with new ideas, writing styles and topics. The flow of creative ideas within the community is both beneficial and inspiring!

Our readers offer great encouragement to the Authors by providing honest and constructive feedback when rating and reviewing their rateable items.

Whether you agree or disagree, want gentle honest feedback or "Just Keep it Gentle, Please." Let us know. It's up to you. We welcome you and truly want to oblige. *Smile*

I don't think people realize how important it is to write write write everyday! I usually find a poetry contest and whip something up. Thats my writing for the day even if I am a story writer!

And reading too! Reading and reviewing are just as important, maybe even moreso.

Thank you all for the feedback. Just as you love it for your writing, newsletter editors love it too. Just keep it kind, please. *Smile*
