About This Newsletter

Like many of you, I've considered myself a writer my whole life. But in 2007, I shifted out of hobbyist mode, started writing for an audience, and embarked on the exciting journey towards publication. As I continue on that path and delve ever deeper into the craft, I feed an insatiable appetite for creative writing theory. I seek out how-to books and workshop experiences to augment and amplify whatever talent I possess. For those of you like me, here's a little theory to appease your hunger.

Letter from the editor

Merry Christmas to those of you who celebrate the holiday! And to everyone, I wish you the very best as we wind down another year and look forward to 2014.

I have a confession to make. I didn't write one word of new fiction in 2013.

Not

One

Word.

It's been a wonderful year for me, full of new challenges as I re-entered the workforce and tackled a new career path. The people I met have changed the course of my life. And I have been writing! I've just been writing press releases, website content, magazine articles and marketing campaigns instead of short stories and poetry.

I've missed fiction, but I haven't needed to write. Not like before. Not like when I needed it as badly as I needed breath in my lungs.

Two weeks ago I got to meet an online friend who I've "known" for close to five years via the Internet. She and I began blogging at around the same time and eventually became writing partners. Every Friday we swapped the chapters we'd written that week, offering each other broad-stroke feedback on character development and plot. About twenty chapters in, she sold another manuscript to a publisher -- her first novel -- and we put our critique arrangement on hold while she worked with her new editor.

I never finished my novel. But she went on to publish the one we were working on together -- that made her second book -- and several more after that. Meeting her face-to-face was always an aspiration for both of us, despite the fact that she lives in Athens, Greece and I live in Georgia, USA. But finally, the opportunity arrived.

While we were together, we talked a lot about writing: about the craft, about her process verses mine, about edits and inspirations and the definition of success. And I began to need to write again.

It's always with me, the desire to write, to express myself, to create.

As 2013 winds down, I've begun to look forward to the new year. It will be a year when fiction plays a more important role in my life. I want to begin creating again.

The voices have begun to whisper.

Last Month's Question: Want to give it a try? Write down a memory from any holiday, in at least 500 words, and post the bitem link here in the comments or in an email to me NickiD89 and I'll send you a merit badge, and feature your holiday story in my next Drama Newsletter on December 25th! Here's what readers said:

BIG BAD WOLF Happy July 4th! -- Well, I wrote my Family Christmas story some years ago, so I don't know if it would qualify. As for family stories, I'm trying to find out how Irish Royalty and Rum-running got together to create my branch of the family.

for your reading and sharing pleasure.

Beautiful! *Merit Badge Sent*

And, a comment for Thoughts on Omniscient Narration  :

Pepper -- Thanks for taking on the multiple POV debate. This is one of my reviewing pet peeves for short stories. A writer might get away with it in longer works but not in shorter works. There is hardly enough time to connect to one character, so forget head-hopping.

Pepper

I hate head-hopping too!!

See you all back here on January, 2013. Until then, have a great month!
