Letter from the editor

HEROES

I grew up reading comics and pulp-fiction. In my mind I was Tarzan, Conan, Zorro, John Carter, Flash Gordon, Commander Cody, the Rocketeer, Dick Tracey, Batman, and Superman; and the list goes on and on. I styled myself after all these men. When I thought there was injustice in the neighborhood my blood would boil with outrage, my heart would pound with a sense of adventure, my spleen would swell with righteous anger, my spine would stiffen with courage, and my gut would clench with the right kind of healthy fear, the kind that wouldn't loosen my bowels *Rolleyes*. I was born to be a hero and would never shirk from the code that all heroes lived by: to fight for truth, justice, and the American way.

*sigh* So what the hell happened?

Where's my fortitude now, my commitment, my iron-nerve? What happened to my pluck. my mettle, my true grit? Back in the day I was game, I had intrepidity, I knew how to nail my colors to the mast and stick fast to them. Now I just clock-in at work, do ten hours, and then drag my butt back home again

What happened to me? Who killed that adventurous heart I so loved in my youth? It was a mystery to me until I realized it was just good fiction. The authors were the heroes, not the characters.

So I started to write, and then it all came back to me. Through my words I could again be all the heroes I ever looked up to, and more. Now there is no monster too evil for me to handle.

Zombies?

Hell, I spit at zombies!

Aliens from outer-space?

Ha! Bring it on you slimy scum!

I guess what I'm trying to say here is that I have, in a sense, found the proverbial fountain of youth. As long as I can create, I can be the hero I've always dreamed of being.

At last I can...*dare I say it*...SAVE THE WORLD!!!!

Until next time...

While I don't like horror/slasher movies/books I have become a huge fan of the movie DEVIL by M.Knight Shymalan. Character development and twist has me a total fan and the execution of the horror had me totally engrossed. I have watched it a number of times and I never get tired of the plot, and its twists. Watch it and tell me if you don't agree!

Everyone loves a good scare. It's the adrenaline rush. Like the people who go on crazy roller coaster rides. I prefer psychological horror to gory stories. Not because I'm afraid of gore. I just find psychological horror stories more scary. I saw a film called They or Them or some such film several years ago. The damn film creeped me out so much! And barely a drop of gore in it. It was all about what lurks under the bed or in the closet. That's what really scares!
