About This Newsletter

Hello, I am Annette Author Icon and I will be your guest editor for this issue. This is my first ever Fantasy Newsletter. An exciting event for me. And a little strange since I always counted myself among the fantasy writers. I hope you enjoy today's maiden Fantasy Newsletter for me.

Magic

The more fantastical it gets - the more rules you need. Especially in all things magic.

When writing fantasy, you have all the freedom in the world to make up anything and everything as you go. Your readers will be okay to go along with just about anything you come up with - as long as you stay consistent. Fantasy readers are geeks and nerds. Come on you leisure readers, you know you can't read a fantasy novel without thinking a little harder, inspecting everything a little deeper. So, as a writer, you've got to give the fantasy readers rules that are consistent. You don't have to (and maybe shouldn't) publish what the rules are in your book, but your descriptions of events and characters' actions have to follow certain rules.

In regards to magic, ask yourself some questions before you start writing.

Who can use magic?
*Bullet* Everybody.
*Bullet* Some people (hereditary or learned?)
*Bullet* Animals.
*Bullet* Only certain races of beings?

How is magic performed?
*Bullet* Wand.
*Bullet* Hand moves.
*Bullet* Thinking hard, concentrating.
*Bullet* Touch.
*Bullet* Line of sight.
*Bullet* Potions, poisons, ointments.
*Bullet* Artifacts.

What can magic accomplish?
*Bullet* Moving things.
*Bullet* Influencing people to do things.
*Bullet* Telling the future.
*Bullet* Hurting or healing people or animals.

Limitations of magic
*Bullet* Does a magician run out of magic or can he/she lose it?
*Bullet* Is there a level of magic that is innate to people/animals such as being invisible, immortal, extra strong, anything unique due to magic?
*Bullet* Is there a counter-spell to each spell you have invented?
*Bullet* Are there creatures that are immune to magic?
