The Keukenhof (translated: kitchen garden) can be found in the town of Lisse, Netherlands, southwest of Amsterdam. Called the "Garden of Europe," it has held the title of the world's largest flower garden for 50 years. I had an opportunity to visit the Keukenhof in 1997 while I was stationed in Germany.

Tulips at the Keukenhof

Close to 7 million flower bulbs are planted annually in the park. The garden is open from mid-March to mid-May. It's known for it's tulips. The best time to visit is mid-April.

Flowers at the Keukenhof, Lisse, Netherlands

Awards are given every year for various flowers including tulips, roses, and chrysanthemums. Within the Keukenhof are various styles of gardens including a winding English landscape, an historical garden featuring old type bulbs, a nature garden with water and a Japanese country garden.

*Question* Did you know?

The Netherlands is the world's largest exporter of flowers.

A flower is the warmest way into the heart. *Smile*

Challenge Write a 2000 word romantic vignette that takes place in the Keukenhof. It could be a first kiss, a flower exchange, a smile, a letter, etc.

*Question* What romantic places do you want to visit this summer? Write in and let me know.

Feedback from my Romance/Love Newsletter DTD: 1 MAY 2013

My favorite romantic comedy is Pretty Woman.

That one is definately high on my list!

We pretty well have the same list. I would add Sleeping in Seattle, No Reservations and You've Got Mail (based on Little Shop around the Corner-a Jimmy Stewart movie)

I'm not sure I can pick out an all time favorite romantic comedy, but up at the top with several others would be "Same Time, Next Year", starring Alan Alda and Ellen Burstyn. But would you classify that as a comedy, or something else? Parts were funny, some pretty serious.

Would you say it's kinda "quirky?" (I haven't seen it.) If it's quirky, that works!

I'm not much on the Romantic/Comedy side, but I do enjoy a good romance in my comedies. I keep trying to think of it, I think maybe it is Grosse Point Blank with John Cussack and he falls for Minnie Driver who is a local radio host? Maybe it is a different movie. Anyway, thanks for the writing tips, it got my gears going, being mostly a horror or speculative fiction writer (in which I add comedy in both) and I like the idea's presented here. Maybe I will give it a try.

I haven't seen that movie, but John Cusack always makes me smile!
