Letter from the editor

National Poetry Month

It's one of my favorite months of the year again- April! Besides welcoming spring, and spring-like temperatures (finally) here in the Northeast, it's also a month to celebrate poetry.

Started in 1996 by The Academy of American Poets, National Poetry Month's goals are to:

*Note*Highlight the extraordinary legacy and ongoing achievement of American poets
*Note*Introduce more Americans to the pleasures of reading poetry
*Note*Bring poets and poetry to the public in immediate and innovative ways
*Note*Make poetry a more important part of the school curriculum
*Note*Increase the attention paid to poetry by national and local media
*Note*Encourage increased publication, distribution, and sales of poetry books
*Note*Increase public and private philanthropic support for poets and poetry

In my opinion, the beauty of National Poetry Month is that it helps emphasis to Americans that poetry is for everyone, not just MFA students and published poets. Through the media, the Academy of American Poets encourages schools and libraries to hold special programming, such as poetry readings and read-ins, during the month of April. They also offer a list of "30 Ways to Celebrate" on their website. One of the most creative suggestions is to celebrate Poem in Your Pocket Day on April 18th. You can download a pocket sized poem from their website and read it at any one of a number of poetry readings throughout the country on that day.

For poetry lovers, National Poetry Month is a celebration of their favorite genre. But for those who have yet to be introduced to the joys of poetry, it can help them see what I'm sure all recipients of the Poetry Newsletter know: Poetry is awesome!
