Creating Just For Fun

Sometimes when I'm surfing our community for something to read, I'll find a puzzle, survey, quiz or In and Out. If I have time - I participate in the activity and I do try to leave a review if I see something could be improved. It's a fun little thing to do and it lets members know they have people visiting their portfolio. No one likes a lonely portfolio. Once again, this is within the theme of participation on the site. The more you participate, the more people will visit your portfolio.

In and Outs are relatively easy to create and have a lot of options for formatting your item. The instructions are there for you when you Create an Item. The hardest part is when you get to Section 6: Item Type Specific Setting. This is where you format your In and Out and determine how the page will display. If you use the In and Out for contest submissions, don't forget to require item IDs. Allowing Self Deletion is nice, this way a member can delete their post if they find a mistake. If you're not sure what a setting will do, create the item and post a few tests before making the item public. You can delete all the test posts before you open the item.

Then promote your item, plug them on the "Activities @ Writing.ComOpen in new Window. page, invite members in "Writing.Com General DiscussionOpen in new Window. or link it when greeting newbies over on the "Noticing NewbiesOpen in new Window. page. Think about using In and Outs as a billboard for your group, posting announcements or letting members promote within your group.

So next time you're working on items for your group or for the community in general, think beyond the standard static item and message forum, and see what other fun things you can create.

This month's question: How do you use In and Outs? What other fun items have you tried? Send in your answer and links below! *Down* Editors love feedback!

Ask & Answer

This month's question: How do you use In and Outs? What other fun items have you tried? Send in your answer and links below! *Down* Editors love feedback!

Last month's question: What suggestions do you have to keep our community active?

Quick-Quill Author Icon responded: I truly think reviewing and encouraging others is what guides people to take chances on a contest. When you get encouragement you seek to do better and then submit for more of that positive feedback. That's what I did, and now I offer the same encouragement to others.

THANKFUL SONALI Library Class! Author Icon answered: Hi Leger! You're so right - it's each member's participation that is important. Too often, in both real-life and online communities, people expect the community to keep going even if they don't contribute their bit of time. Thanks for the reminder and the tips! - Sonali
