About This Newsletter

Is your science fiction of fantasy novel a character driven or plot driven story? Some thoughts on plots and how I got them.

Letter from the editor

Last Thursday, I watched the weather channel's Deadliest Space Weather. The narrator talked about the planet wide dust storms that engulf Mars periodically. The next subject the narrator mentioned concerned terraforming Mars or changing its environment so that it becomes more Earth like. The documentary even showed an artist rendition of a terraformed Mars with oceans and continents. Since terraforming is subject of several science fiction stories, it got me to thinking about plots, characters, and plot devices.

I have attempted to remember the plots of the terraforming novels and stories I have read. I have to admit that I do not remember what steered those plots. I remember some of the stories, but I do not remember the plots. Another thing I do not remember is any mention of how the terraforming of a planet effected the native life on that planet. I suspect the plot of a story about how terraforming affected the native life forms would be character driven while a story that focused on the difficulties of terraforming a planet would be steered by the plot.

Since I am in the process of rewriting a science fiction novel, I need to determine if the story is plot-driven or character-drive. I think that once I determine that I will have fewer difficulties rewriting and editing. These are just some thoughts that watching a T.V. documentary brought to my mind. I thought, that since many of us are editing or rewriting our NaNoWriMo novels, I would share them with you.

Excerpt: I’m a Psych. Now, most people hear that and freak. But I promise, it’s not as scary as it seems. About one percent of the population is some kind of psych, and most of them aren’t anything to be scared of. Sure, there are a few super powerful psychs that can throw someone across a room with a single thought or move faster than the eye can see, but they’re in a large minority. Most of us psychs don’t move much faster than normal, and we can barely lift a rock off the ground unless we use our hands.

Excerpt: Pain, then the immense feeling of hopelessness. It was all that made up the world for Quintanius Vivello, he could see the flow of crimson soaking through the chain-mail and the the barbed end of a broken blade protruding from his armpit. It took considerable effort for him to discard the dented helm and unbuckle the hideously scarred but once beautiful breastplate...

Excerpt: Near the very end, long after the world had been engulfed in an ocean of colourlessness, and all was tool, gear and featureless mechanism, there was a place called The Room. The Room stood in the middle of The Zone, the twisting, gaping, filthy, slate-grey husk of an abandoned industrial complex, choked by a forest of untamed weeds and half-drowned in mud-blackened rainwater, the sky above it forever sheeted in icy grey cloud. And The Room, so the whispered fables said, was a place of miracles amidst this bleakness; for whosoever set foot in it, so it was claimed, would be granted their innermost wish.
