Noticing Newbies design

What is a forum? A forum is an assembly, meeting place, television program, etc., for the discussion of questions of public interest1. Here at Writing.Com  Open in new Window., we gather to do just that. We meet, greet, discuss, question, direct, plug, ponder, invite, and more. So in basic form, a forum is a gathering place of like minded individuals for a common purpose.

You now have an idea what there is to do in a forum, but the question still remains, how do you make a forum post? Don't laugh, but I get asked that at least once a week sometimes. It isn't always easy learning the navigation of a new surrounding. Let us start with the basics. Click on the arrow on the next set of words *Right*"Noticing NewbiesOpen in new Window.. Now that we all have the same page open, you should be on the Noticing Newbies  Open in new Window. forum page. First, you will see a nice image, created specifically for this forum. Underneath that, you will find a list of suggested uses for the forum, followed by a few tips. After you have traversed the items of interest for newbies, I suggest you refresh the page, a new item or two may appear in this section of the forum. Yes, some of the items randomly rotate, so that each time the page opens, a new item is listed. Once you have your fill of these, you can scroll down some more, past the Read a Newbie  Open in new Window. link. Keep strolling down the page, until you see the two stars. It is important you read the message between the stars. This is a small reminder of what NOT to put in a post.

Beneath the stars, we have found the forum posting section, the bold bar that goes across the screen, down toward the bottom of the forum page. Directly above the bar, it will have two options, Post a new message, or Un-threaded or Threaded View, (depending on your personal selection). Let us briefly mention the bar for a moment. On the bar, you have SORT, TO PAGE, and SEARCH options with drop down or insert options. The sort option lets you sort through the posts already made, using a variety of ways to view the threads. The to page, lets you pick a page of threads to start viewing. Finally we have the search box which allows you to search through the threads by topic. Now lets move back up, to the post a new message.

To post a new message:

*Right* click on the words, post a new message and two boxes appear. One for subject, and the other for the body of your post. Remember to keep the posts in relevance to the forum subject.
*Right* type in the subject box a brief summary of the message
*Right* in the larger box, type in your message. At the end of your message there is a place to include GPs if you so wish, that will go directly to the forum leader or to the forum group, depending on the set-up of the forum.
*Right* Check the box to the left, by clicking in it, so that when someone replies to your message, you get an email pertaining to this.
*Right* Your last options are basic, and you can either click, submit, preview, spell check or clear your post.

Now that you are more comfortable with making a post, why don't you head on over to the Noticing Newbies  Open in new Window. forum page. If you are new, post a message. If you have been here a while, reply to a message, and warmly welcome our new members to this community.

Thank you for reading this quick tutorial on forum posting and theNoticing Newbies  Open in new Window. forum. I hope some of you found this guide useful. Those that didn't need the reminders and posting is a daily routine to you, please remember to welcome our new friends in the halls of theNoticing Newbies  Open in new Window. forum.

Ask & Answer

Remember to leave feedback for the editors. Your feedback is appreciated.

Question for next month: Can you come up with a new and useful design for using the forum posting?

There was no question posed to readers for my last newsletter, but here are a few of the responses received:

johnny1209:
You wrote the best reasons for entering contests that I've seen. :)

'Contests help to improve our writing. We have to follow certain rules and guidelines when entering or writing for a contest. They can spark the muse and lead to creativity, when writing for a specific prompt, and they may lead to reviews and exposure of writing within our portfolios. Further exposure of our writing leads to new feedback, which helps us as writers. '

Devil's Delight-Cherry Author IconI love recieving reviews as much as the next person and I ALWAYS review someone who has reviewed my work. What I find difficult to deal with is when someone reviews, and says your "wordage" or your "transition" is wrong, or you "need to check your rhyme." Please POINT out the exact problem. Most of us read and re-check our work anyhow, so if there is something we are doing wrong, BE SPECIFIC! That's what constructive criticism is all about. *Smile*
It makes all the difference.
