Letter from the editor

I couldn't believe my eyes. I opened my email, to simply keep up with things, and found I had been lavished with so many acts of kindness, I didn't know where to begin. I hadn't thought about what day it was, but apparently someone else had. Today was the anniversary of my account birthday, and many members of the community decided to remind me of how special this day was. Tears of happiness fell as I read the emails and wishes that flooded my inbox. I can't even begin to express how I felt. I was no longer the wallflower, but now the center of attention. I didn't realize how many people here I had touched over the years, as reviews and more came in. I found c-notes, emails, merit badges and Gift Points, all decorating my mail. I was so happy. Wouldn't it be great if everyone could feel this way. There actually is a way.

Today is a great day. It is someone's account birthday! How do I know this? Well, if a member has been active during the last six months, you can find their account birthday listed at Birthdays  Open in new Window.. Now, exactly how did I come by this information? I simply went on a hunt for something interesting to write about. To the left of the screen underneath the Writing Dot Com logo, below your account information, there is a table of contents that breaks up into additional lists. I scrolled down to the Tools section, Writing.Com Tools, and selected the first option, Account Birthdays  Open in new Window.. Once you are in the Birthdays  Open in new Window. section, you can view active members who have an Account Birthday this month! You can view the current day, the past day, the next day, or the whole month.

Now why would I want to know who was having an account birthday today? Have you ever wanted to do something nice for someone? Wouldn't it be a great act of kindness to send a c-note or email to this person, in recognition of their special day! Sending a merit badge for their account birthday is always something that puts a smile on a face as well.

There are many groups out there that recognize account birthdays or anniversaries. One such activity or group is "Anniversary ReviewsOpen in new Window.. They recognize account birthdays through reviews and review encouragement. They get their list just as the directions above suggest.

There is a special shop that recognizes account birthdays, and you can find it here at "Writing.Com - Account BirthdaysOpen in new Window..
This shop recognizes account birthdays as well as promotions, "Invalid ItemOpen in new Window.
Here you can celebrate birthdays of all types with variety "cNote Images - BirthdayOpen in new Window.

CHALLENGE

Wouldn't it be great if each, and every one, of the members with an account birthday today, received an email or cnote from the readers of this newsletter. I challenge each and every one of you to go out and send a c-note to each of the people who are having an account birthday. If each of us were to take a day of the month and do this, then everyone who is currently active would find a flood of congratulations and birthday wishes in their email.

Ask & Answer

RESPONSES TO THE QUESTION POSED TO OUR READERS, Should contests charge an entry fee, and if so, why?:

JuniorWriter21 Author Icon I don't think contests should charge an entry fee.

Fi Author IconShould contests charge an entry fee? Personally, I don't reckon so. I mean, I understand the need for funds, but somehow it takes some of the fun out of it. The advantage of an entry fee is you get serious contestants who invest time in their entries. But the creativity is lost along the way, somehow. And young or poorer writers may not have the opportunity because they don't have money to enter. So, in short, I think entry fees are cheating, and defeat the purpose of encouraging creativity. *Smile*

BIG BAD WOLF is Howling Author Icon If the fee is used towards the prize, it's understandable. Otherwise, forget it- in my opinion.

Comments from our readers:

Tornado Dodger Author Icon Thank you for highlighting "Random Acts of Holiday KindnessOpen in new Window.! I appreciate the extra advertising for such a worthy cause. You rock! *Bigsmile*

Breaker~A Vigilante Ranger~ Author IconYour NL was definitely interesting and helpful to many of us here. Though I liked how you answer Quick-Quill Author Icon's concern about adding how to find newbies in a very thoughtful way. To let you know, I follow several steps you mentioned here, and I can tell that it really works. Now, I can tell the number of the blue cases in total is exactly 143. lol

Anyway, thank you so much for including "Invalid ItemOpen in new Window. in your NL. It helps me spread the word about my raffle, which meant to support several worthy groups and activities. *BigSmile*
