After the Love has Gone

The most common form of romance or love story follows a general plot line:
The characters get to know each other.
Attraction forms in at least one of the two characters.
The couple-to-be has to overcome some sort of adversity.
In a happy ending, the couple gets to live together happily forever after. (Shrek and Fiona)
In an unhappy ending, one or both die. (Romeo and Juliet)

A second and very popular form of romance or love story is the love triangle.
Generally, we'll follow the character who is being courted by the two others.
The characters fighting for the main character show up in their interactions with her/him.
In the end, one of the rivals ends up getting the girl or the boy and it's considered a happy ending.
But ... what about the one who's left out?

Both the love story with a happy ending and the love story where a couple form out of a love triangle usually ends with the warm and fuzzy feelings of ongoing bliss. In real life, many marriages fail. In a bit of a reverse romance/love newsletter, I wanted to shine the light on stories that explore what happens when the love has gone or when love is doomed from the beginning.
