Young Love

I remember my first love. I was in first grade, and he was the blond, dimpled-faced new boy from California in my class. It was a giggly "he's really cute" kind of love, and I was absolutely obnoxious about it! I even made up a really annoying nickname for him, which I called him all the time. I thought I was so cool until he exclaimed "I'm not your Brad Baby!"

Uh oh.

Over the years, our relationship went through many phases. A couple of years after I first met Brad, he found out he had Leukemia and had to leave school for awhile. I remember making him a card with a rainbow on it. I have no idea if he still has that card, but my goal was to make him the best card in our class.

Later, when we were in junior high and he had been in remission for years, he suddenly turned from cutie pie to hot hunk. He was too busy being Mr. Popular to pay attention to me, and I was too busy being Miss Awkward to even try with him. We grew apart as we grew older, but I'll always remember him as my first love, even if he didn't share the same feelings.

Brad is happily educated, employed, and engaged man now. And he's still hot.

One never knows what will happen with a first love. I sort of envy those people who marry their childhood sweethearts. But at the same time, I can't help but to think that those earlier relationships help shape who we are and how we deal with relationships today. For example, I've never called a guy an annoying, cheesy nickname the first day we met since then!
