Welcome 2012!
I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm eagerly awaiting the new year. It's time for a new start, and this time of year tends to have people thinking about one thing - resolutions.
Whether your resolution is to write more, to review more, or even to enter or host more contests & activities, here are some tips on making and keeping your New Year's Resolutions:
Think small. Often, we make grand resolutions and expect huge results. Maybe someone wants to lose 100 lbs this year or read 100 books. That seems like a huge, daunting task and it can lead to early disappointment or abandonment of the goal. Thinking smaller may help the goal come to pass. Break it down into smaller segments, like weekly and monthly goals. Even if the goal number for the year stays the same, sometimes thinking about it in smaller terms with short-term goals along the way can help you stay motivated. If your goal is to be published in 2011, make sure you include smaller steps along the way, like completing a manuscript, sending out query letters and submitting work for publication.
Know yourself. You know best what will motivate you to keep at your goal. Use that to keep yourself motivated! Most people are motivated my rewards, so come up with a reward system to celebrate your successes along the way!
Challenge yourself. Pick a goal that isn't easy for you. Maybe reading 100 books in one year sounds impossible (I know someone who did it in 2011!) but perhaps reading 50 is more attainable? Then next year, set that goal just a little higher to challenge yourself!
Some ideas for 2012 resolutions:
Read! Read x-number books! 50 is almost one per week, or perhaps try to read 2 per month. Pick a goal that is challenging but attainable. Reading strengthens writing!
Write! Make it a goal to write daily (blogging or otherwise), or to write a new poem/short story every week.
Enter! Enter Writing.Com contests and activities. There are plenty of monthly, weekly, even daily contests to spark your creativity!
Review! Reviewing has a multitude of rewards. Not only can you earn a great amount of gift points by reviewing, but you'll also improve your writing, and you may receive reciprocal reviews and even earn a few friends along the way!
Be Abstract! Your goal doesn't have to be one that you can measure. You can make it a goal to be more positive, to be kinder to those around you, to achieve a greater understanding or compassion.
The point of a resolution is to accomplish something, obviously, but it can also be a boost to your morale. It feels great to set out to do something and to actually do it. There may be doubts and setbacks along the way, but it's important to keep trying! Even if it appears like you won't reach your goal, it's worth it to maintain the effort, because it is the journey that is the ultimate reward.
Contests & Activities Tip
Ratings are important! The rating of a contest (like a forum) must reflect the words that appear in the item's body as well as its messages, but not the item entries themselves. For instance, you may have an E-rated forum which contains links to 18+ and above items, as long as their titles and intros are E-rated.
Always keep on writing!

My last newsletter, ("Contests & Activities Newsletter (November 29, 2011)" ), discussed Creative Uses for Reviews.
Reviewing can be an auction package. My motivation is that I have a bunch of packages in several auctions.
