Letter from the editor

*Xmastree* It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year! *Menorah*

The holiday season of Christmas, Hanukkah and whatever else you like to celebrate in December is arriving! Yes, I know it's November but we need to save our gift points and spend some time reviewing. We all like to give to our friends, don't we? While a few members actually know each other 'in person', many do not. In the season of giving, how do we gift others online?

The first answer is obvious, WDC's "The Writing.Com ShopOpen in new Window.. If you have your physical address listed in your account then members can choose something from the shop and have it shipped to you. Only the Shop sees your personal info and you can get a really cool WDC branded item.

If that isn't in your budget or currency, you can do other wonderful things for your friends. Review them! You can do your reviews early and store them in your review tool as drafts, just don't forget them! *Shock* I know, it's hard to review someone you're friends with and say something nice, but be honest too! Sometimes it's hard to get anyone to read your purple prose. If you don't have the time to review, purchase a review from a group review forum, they'll jump right in and send critiques.

Send them a cNote from any number of cNote shops on our site. These can be sent to not only members, but friends outside our community as well. Create a wordsearch or crossword puzzle about your friend and transfer it and let them know all the nice things you find in your friendship. Send them a signature image or a gift certificate for one. Or plug one of their items in "The Shameless "Plug" PageOpen in new Window.! If you have gift points to spare, you could sponsor one of their items in BidClick.

Auctions, raffles and other holiday activities are a great place to find something for a friend. They're also great places for new members to meet others. Join in the fun and treat your online friends to something special!

Ask & Answer

This month's question: Send in your favorite holiday contest or activity! The Contest and Activity newsletter editors would love to feature you!

Last month I asked readers to send in advice for new flash fiction writers:

MKEidson Author Icon responded: Flash fiction requires conservation of words. First, write your story. Make sure it is a story, with conflict and resolution, though you don't need a happy ending. Restrict yourself to a single scene. After you finish the first draft, cut every word you can, even after you bring the story under the word limit. Read the story again. Does it convey everything it needs to convey? If not, add some words back in. Read again, checking word flow and rhythm, because all that revising can make for choppy sentences. Keep reading and revising until you're happy with it and it's under the word limit. Then submit!

Thank you for the great advice!
