Famous Literary Couples

Romeo and Juliet may be one of the most famous literary couples of all time. Since sometime in the late 1500's (when Shakespeare was said to have written the play Romeo and Juliet), people have known the story of the young star-crossed lovers. The story has become a big part of our pop culture, made into numerous movies and referenced in probably thousands of other movies, TV shows and books.

For me, Romeo and Juliet is a classic love story, but by no means a perfect one. Modern audiences are used to a "happily ever after" at the end of their love stories. I have to wonder if "happily ever after" is any less realistic than two lovers killing themselves over each other. Regardless, love stories are always about fantasy anyway; they're about escaping to a land, a situation, and two characters who do not exist in real life, a place where there may be conflict, but that conflict is always resolved at the end of the story so that we as readers get the feeling of "happily ever after."

Now, my question for you is, Who are your favorite literary couples, both classic and modern? Who, besides Romeo and Juliet, do you think of when you think of romance? Your answers will be in my next newsletter!
