What Now?

My last newsletter, "Contests & Activities Newsletter (June 15, 2011)Open in new Window., talked about the thrill of entering a contest. So, let's say you took the plunge and entered. Now what? It's now time for that dreaded period, the waiting game. You've got nothing to do but sit and wait for the results to be announced, right? Not exactly! There's plenty you can do to keep yourself busy so you won't go nuts wondering if you've won! *Laugh*

*Bullet* Review your work - Often, it's against the contest rules to edit your item before judging is concluded, but that doesn't mean you can't print out your work and make your own edits! Keep in mind any feedback you receive from judges, other participants and other WDC members. Edit while the item is still fresh in your mind!

*Bullet* Continue your work - Maybe you think your item is perfected and doesn't need improvement, but since the story is still fresh, consider contemplating, "What next?" What happens next in your story? Take one of your side characters and explore their story! Or think about how the story would be different if you placed it in a different time or a different world! The options are endless!

*Bullet* Review others' work - It's great etiquette to review the other entries in a contest you've entered (as well as the contest itself)! Writing in-depth reviews can take up a lot of time, and reviewing improves your own writing!

*Bullet* Find another contest - There are plenty of contests on Writing.Com to keep you busy! "The Writer's CrampOpen in new Window. [13+] is one of my favorites to watch and enter!

*Bullet* Write a blog - Get your mind off the contest by writing about something else that's been on your mind! Blogging can be a great writing tool, too!

*Bullet* Find an activity - I like sorting activities (like polls, surveys, In & Outs, etc.) by "Newest First" to see which new items could use some attention!

*Bullet* Create an activity - While you're still in that creative zone, it's a perfect time to create an activity of your own! Create a new poll, write a product review, or start a group! Again, there are plenty of options!

There are tons of things to do while you wait for the winners to be announced! Lots to distract you from the anticipation! *Bigsmile*

Always keep on writing!

Ask & Answer

My last newsletter, ("Contests & Activities Newsletter (June 15, 2011)Open in new Window.), discussed Taking the Plunge.

Always something to find. ~ BIG BAD WOLF is Howling Author Icon

Thanks for the feedback!! *Smile*

Though I'm unable to compete as much as I once was, I still find myself a wreck right around the 1st and 15th of every month, pacing from wall to wall either begging for a muse or cursing the one that convinced me to suffer the two week judging period to begin with. But then, with a few deep breaths, I realize that I actually *did* write something, win or lose. Competitions have pushed me farther than I could've ever imagined I'd go, and I couldn't recommend them enough to anyone, especially if one might be prone to pacing...Thanks for the excellent NL!

You're welcome, and thanks for sharing your thoughts! *Smile*
