Quotes
"Imitation is not just the sincerest form of flattery-- it's the sincerest form of learning."
~ George Bernard Shaw
Inspiration through Imitation
There's nothing wrong with modeling your writing from other writers. It's a great exercise and may help you discover your own voice.
Imitation is not plagerism. To steal someone else's exact words or ideas is when you could find yourself accused of plagerism. Read the following link for more detail: http://www.plagiarism.org/plag_article_what_is_plagiarism.html
Piggyback songs use a familiar melody with different words. If the tune was published in 1922 or earlier in the US, it is Public Domain, meaning it legally has no owner. For more information on Public Domain and also a list of Public Domain Music, go to: http://www.pdinfo.com/list.php
Athletes replicate movements modeled by those they admire. It's great practice, and with practice comes improvement. Improvement means bettering the original.
Imitation teaches, whether you are an author, songwriter, or athlete. Inspiration thrives from imitation. And once you feel the movement of words, music, or muscle, it all becomes open to experimentation, which is where you'll find your voice, your rhythm, and your moves.
Have a wonderful week!!!
Yours truly,

And Now For Our Featured Newbies!
Excerpt:
My life has become a brittle bouquet
Of dead red roses in rapid decay
And all that I thought one day I could be
Is now but a part of lost history.
Excerpt:
Soft Swirls of smoke linger for a time,
to twirl timidly,
and perform their melancholy dance.
Excerpt:
Sun shine drips though trees
Down, the rays of light
Down, the rays of life
Come...
Shine upon me
Warming the soul
Excerpt: I sat, wings spread, on this perfect resting place behind the waterfall. This is my favorite spot in all of Heaven. The rock platform stays dry, and the view from here is amazing. Beautiful green trees tower over my head, the sun shining through them in all its glory. The waterfall itself is majestic. It's hard to look away. As the water splashes down it sings me a glorious lullaby, while the birds chirp along in perfect harmony. Maybe this only applies to me, I'm not sure. I find music in everything, being the Angel of Music.
Excerpt: Dear Aryanne,
Please share this with my parents, family and friends, as it may be the last words I will ever share with you all.
Need I say it? Must I state the obvious humiliating truth? I don't know if I can bear it.
I am not a fighter.

FEEDBACK
Fi
I enjoy exposing my work because I know others can enjoy it and offer me helpful feedback. I have never felt shy about posting on WDC - in fact, I have to limit myself! - because everyone on Writing.Com understands: they do it themselves!
~ What a great attitude!

Your instructions on "ways to expose as a writer are very useful to me though I can't call myself a writer at all because I have only written two pieces of writing so far. but I am in urgent need of your help as you say it here for serious and honest feed back and I know if I get them anywhere this is the place for it. So I hope you will help me with my request and thank you for your taking trouble to help new comers.
~ It's no trouble at all! And... if you've written, YOU are a writer.
BIG BAD WOLF Feeling Thankful
I enjoy showing off my work. I just wonder what people will say about it.
~ Go for it! What can you lose?

Hi Cubby, I have to play devil's advocate and say we do need to be aware of overexposure in our promo efforts. I've seen authors who are everywhere constantly (instead of in moderation or for short bursts to promo a new book) and I get so sick of seeing it, I don't even look anymore to see what they are promoting. It's like watching the same commercial five times during one half hour show. Enough already! We need to be careful to respect our readers. They have other things to think about than our books.
~ Thank you for bringing this up! It's so true! And important for writers to realize.Great point!

Hello Cubby!
I found your newsletter on over-exposure very helpful. As I writer, the more exposure we get the better it is for us. The tips you have given were interesting and I'll try to follow them whenever I can.
Best wishes,
Arpita
~ Thanks, Arpita!

Hi I'm new to your site. I was just wondering about putting my writings on the web site. Does the book need to be finished and ready to be published or can I just submit one chapter at a time to get feed back? Thank you for your consideration to my question. Chris
~ Your book does not need to be finished and ready for publication. In fact, many of us are here for feedback to help us polish our writing, finished or not. Sounds like you're at the right place!
