The word 'money' evokes different responses.
Love it, hate it, tolerate it or ignore it, you can't deny that it exists - physically, intellectually, spiritually, emotionally, morally - money exists.
So what does money do?

Money.
Money.
Money.
It's a rich man's world - but most likely the poor man's 'beyond' ... ?
Some random thoughts about money:-
By-product or Reason
Work brings money - or money brings work? Do you start out saying - "I need to earn this much a month, so I shall take up this job" - or do you say - "I love this work, so I'll do it, and hey, great, I get paid, too!" ...?
Either way is okay - it's just that you need to know the reason why you're doing a particular job.
Coat and Cloth
The saying goes - 'Cut your coat according to your cloth"
But I'd like to ask the definition of 'coat' and 'cloth'. The 'coat' is what is useful, the 'cloth' is the raw material to make the 'coat'.
So - which way does it go?
To give my personal example - I used to be a copywriter in advertising. The money was good, But I grew to dislike the job, the stress, the long hours - what have you.
I chucked it up to become a school librarian at one-fourth the salary. That's right, I now got 25% of what I was getting before.
People thought I was crazy.
But for me, the 'cloth' wasn't the money to make the 'coat' of whatever money can buy. The 'coat' was peace of mind, a sense of meaning, and job satisfaction, so the 'cloth' had to be adjusted accordingly. I guess I cut my cloth according to my coat!
Money the Oppressor and Liberator
Now this is interesting.
Money can oppress or money can liberate.
And what's interesting is, having money can oppress or liberate - not having money can oppress or liberate.
Like you're saving up for your child's college education or something, and you win the lottery. Getting that money frees you from worry, allows you to spend on other things, whatever - it liberates.
But have a look at this -
I was at a posh toy shop one day, watching a Mom buy a toy car each for her two kids (age 4 and 2, I think).
The cars had to be different colours, to tell them apart, and there was some amount of tantrum-throwing about who got the preferred colour - red.
Outside the toyshop, some beggar kids were playing - with cartons discarded by the toyshop.
The cartons were ships, houses, umbrellas - what have you.
Inside the shop, the 'rich' kids were seeing a red car as a red car. Outside, the 'poor' kids were letting their imagination run riot.
Money - the oppressor ... ?
Community responses about Money
In "Money, Money, Money" , I asked WDC members about money.
I'll leave you to read the responses and interpret them, but I'd like to share with you that according to me, the responses fall roughly into these categories:-
1. Objective / Scientific
2. Personal
3. Moral / Spiritual
4. Combination of these
Degrees of Money
"Would you do __________ for a million dollars? Would you do the same thing if you got just one dollar for it, or didn't get paid at all?"
Some folks would do stuff for a million dollars that they wouldn't do for one dollar or for free. Others wouldn't.
I'm not making any value judgements here, just saying that whatever works for each individual is what works, and that degrees of money are very important to some!
So yeah, as I said, like it or hate it or choose to ignore it, you can't deny it exists!
Thanks for reading,
Sonali
PS: Feedback from Zeke - Thanks!
I will never forget some advice my father gave me when I was a teenager, "Just always remember, whatever they're talking about, it's usually about money"
Feedback from siouxme - Thanks!
Hello My view on money is that it is like any other tool we need to survive within this physical world. It is not how much you have, it is how you use it that is important. Susie.

I appreciate the feedback I received for "Spiritual Newsletter (December 21, 2010)"
Another stellar line-up of choices you did present. Thanks for your thoughts on giving and the insight you impart in each issue of your newsletters.
Merry Christmas and happy new year.
Copenator out!
Thanks, Steve adding writing to ntbk. !
Whenever I think about gifts, I return to the best 'thing' gift I ever got. When I was thirty, I received a hundred-fifty year old clock that had been in our family since it was new from my parents. It still hangs on my wall and runs every day.
Thanks, Zeke
