*Snowman* Have you noticed? All the stores have their Christmas displays up and are trying to lure shoppers in with their glitter and glam. *Snowman*

Can you say the same about your portfolio? *Santahat* Is everything polished and ready to enter in the numerous holiday contests and activities that will be coming in the next month? Oh yes, I just said it...holidays. While you're out shopping for just the right pashmina scarf for your Aunt, your friends will be here hosting and entering all the holiday contests and piling GPs in their coffers like squirrels with acorns.

*Clock* If you're planning a holiday contest or activity, now is the time to start creating your contest page and deciding what to offer as prizes.

*Gold* Check your gift point totals now and see if you have enough for the prizes or if you'll need to do some marathon reviewing to build up your numbers. If you plan on running a new round from last year's contest or activity, now is the time to clean up your page and tweak what needs to be improved. Was there confusion on some of the rules? Try to make them clearer. Did members enter after the deadline? Highlight the deadline more prominently on your page. Just like the NaNoWriMo participants are doing right now, set aside some time each day to work on your item. Then when your contest or activity is running, use that time to manage your item and help the participants.

The more prepared you are, the more you can participate and have fun! The best run items on the site are from members running them smoothly and members participating. Not just entering, but interacting with the other entrants. Be sure to send some cNotes to friends you've made on the site and perhaps a note or two to your favorite Moderators. *Idea*

Watch the "Writing Contests @ Writing.ComOpen in new Window. and "Activities @ Writing.ComOpen in new Window. and of course, the Contest and Activities newsletter for upcoming events for the holiday season - so you don't miss out!

Excerpt: This story takes place on the eighth day after the creation of the world. God wakes up (after the seventh day, on which he rested) and discovers the mess us people have put the world into (Since time is a human construct, a day to God could last a long, long time.) and is too sick to fix it. Why God is sick and how he could get sick should remain left to the imagination.

Ask & Answer

This month's question: What is your favorite holiday activity?

Last month's question: What gothic / horror / scary element makes you most squeamish?

Shannon Author IconMail Icon replied: The thing that makes me most squeamish.... probably either bugs (like i'm talking swarms of cockroaches here)or children who are evil. Like has anyone seen the omen? Or has anyone read about that child murderer Mary Bell? seriously creepy stuff. They give me the shivers every time...

scribbler Author IconMail Icon commented: Anything based on a true story, or that involves human characters acting within the realm of possible human actions. *shivers* If it COULD happen, then it's scary.

Tick Author IconMail Icon answered: Anything that has to do with the abuse of children makes me ill, especially in gothics or historical stories because those days when you were unprotected you really were unprotected. In some stories if the writer gives me too much blood and guts, that just annoys me. Love the newsletter!

BIG BAD WOLF is Merry Author IconMail Icon said: What is scary? It could be the blood-and-guts being taken out of some poor sap. It might be that theme music (DaDun DahDun!). It might be that surprise visit from Mother-in-law.

Of course this guy might say it's the wife's girlfriends.
