On this site you found all that you had searched for: Portfolio space, helpful reviewers, encouraging groups, style and grammar lessons from peers. But nothing had prepared you for the amazing bounty of: Contests & Activities |

Contests and Activities
This month, especially during the first ten days, there were plenty of contests to write for and plenty of activities to participate in. The "Site News & Announcements" were hyperactive with new merit badges, skins, and emoticons for our enjoyment. In "Writing.Com Party Central 2024!" , we were able to find a list of all the special contests planned exclusively for the celebration. Some of the contests have closed, but others are still open to entries. The best part? Even if you do not write a winning entry into one of those contests, you could win a one year Premium Membership by simply posting in the "Birthday Raffle" that you wrote and entered one of the birthday writing contests.
After the those fast paced ten days of writing, it is possible to feel exhausted and run into a creative slump. Flash fiction of just a few hundred words, or even 25 words can keep you motivated. Whether you're dedicating your writing time to pen the next epic, or just want to play with words, there is always a contest host ready to challenge you.
The contest plug page "Writing Contests @ Writing.Com" is ready for an influx of fresh contests to keep us writing until NaNoWriMo. "Activities @ Writing.Com" is waiting to be filled with fresh ideas for activities that enhance our writing and challenge our creativity. |

Unlike many traditional auctions, this auction has hidden awards and prizes. For example, both first and last bids will receive an award; the most bids made by a bidder receives an extra surprise reward. Additionally, any author donating a sig or book will be eligible for a special award.

How many times have you read a novel and two weeks later couldn't remember the name of the protagonist? F. Scott Fitzgerald said, "Character is plot, plot is character."

Here, we are celebrating WDC's Tenth Birthday. In addition, we're throwing our own little Back To School party.
Every week I will post a new contest - this will be made up of a Horror Sub-genre, a Horror Style (both are listed and explained below - please have a read), and a Prompt - this may be one of my own or taken from the groups Prompt Page.

Hint fiction is a story written in 25 words or less. It should hint at a larger story, but stand on its own.
Flash fiction is fun to read and a challenge to write. It must contain all the elements of a larger work of fiction, but in a much shorter space.

saraiv asked: Why do my contests never make it into the newsletter? This is a serious question. For I have held about 5 contests in the past four months and none of them have ever been spotlighted. How do you go about choosing your contests? What are the requirements to make it into the newsletter?
The simplest way to get an item featured in a newsletter is to submit the item ID together with a short description into the comment box at the bottom of every newsletter. A newsletter editor will see it, decide if it fits the theme of their newsletter, and maybe feature it. Of course, you should always post all of your contests in "Writing Contests @ Writing.Com" .

Jeff wrote: Great featured items this week, Giselle! And an excellent overview of what it takes to keep a contest running on WdC.
Thank you, again, for the kind comment.

You're welcome. Not many raffles offer tickets for only 100 GPs anymore.
Kaya wrote: Good newsletter but you forgot to list my contest which has been in business since 2007 and has monthly prizes of an Awardicon, a Merit Badge and gift points. "Invalid Item"

Listing your contest would have been more appropriate in my June 2, 2010 newsletter "Long Running Contests" . So, yes, I did miss it at the time. Sorry for that. I hope having advertised here gives it some more attention. |
