Timeless Comedy
At this time, I believe I have to give a little tribute to Abbott and Costello. The pair made up a truly timeless comedy team that still delights children and adults alike when they come across it. To start the topic of timeless comedy, I will show you a video of one of my favorite routines: 7 x 13 = 28
Now, something that makes this so amusing, at least to me, is that they were able to twist three different forms of mathematics to get the same very, very wrong answer. Along with the twisting, they add in phrases, facial expressions, and storyline that keep people hooked and laughing the entire time.
Abbott and Costello are not the only timeless comics, of course. Surely you've heard of Laurel and Hardy, Charlie Chaplin, Lucille Ball, Three Stooges, Bill Cosby, Whoopi Goldberg, Andy Griffith, Phyllis Diller, Lily Tomlin, Tim Allen... there are countless ones. I could never list them all!
What makes the comedy by these artists timeless?
They picked situations and characters that people will still relate to years later, and find absolutely hilarious.
(For the above, I am referring to the first skit - Mrs. Mitchell, though the second is amusing, as well.)
So, how can you make your comedy just as delightful for years to come? Think about the following as you write:
1. Are the jokes funny, even if you've heard them before? Some comedy comes and goes. There are those movies you watch or books you read that make you giggle every single time! And then there are some that, after the first showing or skim, simply aren't amusing anymore. You need to aim toward those jokes that won't get old, no matter how many times you hear them.
2. Will the situations even be valid in 10 years? 20 years? You want to pick a topic that will still be common in a few years. Two of the most frequently seen topics in timeless comedy are children (Bill Cosby - Chocolate Cake for Breakfast ) and sports (Andy Griffith - Football Game ). Those are not the only topics, however. Pets, jobs, bills, moving, parents, getting older... there are many topics that people will be experiencing in the future, just as they do now. While many things change, some don't.
The key to making your humor timeless, is to make sure everyone is going to understand it - whether they are reading it now, or one hundred years in the future. |
