Father's Day, the day we celebrate fathers, has just past. There are several fathers in the annals of science fiction and fantasy that have had profound effects upon the lives of characters in these genres. The term father can apply to a biological father, adoptive father, or a father figure in a character's life.
Who can forget the moment when Luke Skywalker found out that Darth Vader was his father. However, Darth Vader is not the only infamous or famous father in science fiction or fantasy. If you enter science fiction + fathers into the search window, you will be rewarded by several links concerning fathers and science fiction or fantasy.
Besides Darth Vader, other fathers in this genre include Jor-El, Geppetto, Jonathan Kent, and Ben Sisko to name a few. Geppetto is the creator of and father figure to Pinocchio. Jor-El is Superman's biological father, while Jonathan Kent is the adoptive father. Ben Sisko, a single father, is the commander of Deep Space Nine.
Then there are the fathers of the genre itself, which include H. G. Wells, Jules Verne, Hugo Gernsback, and Edgar Allen Poe. Hugo Gernsback founded Amazing Stories in 1926. Jules Verne wrote Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. H. G. Wells wrote The Time Machine, while Edgar Allen Poe wrote The Unparalleled Adventure of One Hans Pfaall.

Dan Hiestand writes: Hi there! Been a big fan of the newsletter for awhile, and was hoping you might be able to get this club I've created. We're trying to keep one of the last really good Fantasy in-print magazines from closing by raising subscriptions. In my opinion, being able to take advantage of an awesome community like this is one of the things that makes WDC so incredible! Thank you so much for your time!

What are your thoughts on this subject? Has anyone written a fantasy or science fiction story about a father or some aspect of fatherhood?
