Before sitting down in front of the keyboard I need inspiration or motivation. When I’m lucky, inspiration comes in the form of a by line, or small, and I emphasis the word small, paycheck. Jumping on the computer is a breeze. However, more often than not, inspiration takes a back seat to 50-hour work weeks, PTA obligations, Spider Solitaire high scores. What’s a writer to do?
If you find yourself weighed down by uncompleted writing resolutions, not enough follow through to get past your rough drafts, or lost in plain ole, “I’d rather be playing computer games” instead of writing, why not try these two suggestions to help get you in the write frame of mind.
Music – Yep, Music. Songs have long been a way to engage people’s emotions. Why not let music work for you? Think about it, all movies have a soundtrack. Writing an action/adventure short story? Create a playlist with tunes personifying near-death, then last minute rescues.
Book Signings – Local book stores always host theses. I wasn’t a big fan of them until I went to one on a whim. I saw the sign at the corner bookstore in my mom’s home town. Ann Rule. Wow! Even thought true crime books don’t line my bookshelves, I found myself hanging on to every word she spoke. The audience asked specific questions about the case in print, the Ted Bundy book and many of her other works, but writers asked about her inspiration and start of her career.
My point, as writers, our muses often thrive on the climb of others. Hearing how successful writers began their careers douses us in a feeling of “Yes we can” sending us to our keyboards ready to type.
The next time you find Spinder Solitaire barging in front of motivation and inspiration, grab your local paper, pencil in a book-signing, then come home and pull up your iTunes.
