All changes, even the most longed for, have their melancholy;
for what we leave behind us is a part of ourselves;
we must die to one life before we can enter another. ~Anatole France
2009 has come and gone, ushering in a whole new year of growth and change. Maybe you want to quit smoking or lose weight. Perhaps you've vowed to work less and volunteer more. Imagine the possibilities!
For many of us, that bigger (or smaller, as the case may be), badder, better version of ourselves involves writing ... and lots of it. Make a pact with yourself--a to-do list, and stick to it. Does entering one contest, reading two books, completing three in-depth reviews and submitting four pieces of writing every month sound doable? This formula is easy to remember (one, two, three, four), and for people like me who rely on things like formulas and lists, easy to remember is imperative.
Yeah, yeah, I can practically hear some of you thinking, Only four submissions and one contest entry a month? That's nothin'! While it may seem like nothing to some people, for others it's a huge commitment. The key is to make your resolutions achievable. Don't sabotage yourself by setting unrealistic goals. If they're not realistic and achievable you won't succeed, and success is the ultimate goal, right? Start small (baby steps) and work your way up to bigger and better things.
That said, 2010 brings growth and change for me as well. Things have been looking up in my life outside WDC (I just got a pretty big promotion) and finding the time to write quality editorial has become increasingly difficult, so I've decided to step down as a regular editor of the Contests & Activities NL. Look for me once a month in the Short Stories newsletter, though (I'm not that easy to get rid of ).
Thank you all for your friendship and support, and I wish each and every one of you a prosperous, productive 2010.

Due to the holidays, there wasn't any feedback this time. It has been my pleasure editing the Contests & Activities Newsletter since October 2008, and I wish each and every one of you writing success in 2010. |
