Hello, folks! It is I, Web~Witch, as your guest editor this week for the Spiritual Newsletter.
What, you may ask, is a Comedy Newsletter editor doing over here? It’s really very simple, I have come to realize over the years that God really has a sense of humor. I am convinced He put me on this earth to make Him laugh! If you don’t think so, read some of my Comedy Newsletters in the archives. Okay, enough self-plugging!
I had an odd encounter with a library Santa Claus, recently. It was a “take a picture with Santa,” promo. He was such a sweet, old man, who asked me if I wanted to sit on his knee for the picture. I said, ”sure, Santa!” A library elf snapped my picture and so did the man in my life, with his cell phone. After the pictures, Santa asked me what I wanted for Christmas. I told him that I don’t really want anything because I already have everything that means anything to me in my life. This guy kept insisting that there had to be something I wanted or needed. I again said, no, I am happy with what I have.
Well, folks, this guy would not stop badgering me into telling him what I wanted from “Santa.” He offered me gift choices that must be on my mind, such as a new car--a Ferrari, even. Ugh! I cannot imagine having to pay for the insurance on that thing!
“No thanks, Santa, I love my car.”
At that moment, it dawned on me that I was still sitting on Santa’s lap! I know, I know, you can see God laughing at me, too, right?!!! I never realized that Santa could be a dirty old man!
Finally, I yelled out, “a picket fence, you can get me a picket fence, Santa!” With that exclamation, I got off his lap and thanked him for the picture and my future picket fence.
When I got home, that day, I started thinking about Christmas and the spirit that surrounds it.
I love the magic in the air as Christmas approaches. Everywhere I go, I see people smiling, humming to the carols and being extra courteous to others. Why is it that there is such a difference in personalities at this time? I mean, if you meet those very same people on December 26th, will they still have the holiday spirit? Or, will they be standing in the gift returns aisle at the store, a little less courteous than a few days before and missing that perfect smile?
I dislike being cynical, but I sometimes wonder if the holiday good cheer, has a lot to do with the expectations of receiving something coveted. If that is the case, disappointment will hit hard. When gift receiving becomes that important, the heart is empty and the soul is starving for spiritual nourishment. I think that is very sad.
Why am I jumping ahead of Christmas, which is soon upon us? Because, it is my hope that these thoughts will inspire you to foresee the days following Christmas and keep spreading the cheer. Open your heart to someone who is lonely. Share a meal and a bit of laughter. Which reminds me of this true story ...
My cousin’s brother-in-law became a minister. He was about to give his first sermon and was sweating profusely with worry about making a good impression with his new congregation. He had practiced his sermon to perfection as the time to do the service approached.
The poor dear, went up to the podium and began his lecture.
“Good morning, ladies and gentlemen, I am here this morning to discuss the urgency of helping the homely and the needless.” “Did I just say that?” His face reddened and the rest of the sermon was torturous for him to do. He kept thinking back at what he said and was embarrassed.
After listening to that story, relatives at our table remarked about it. My uncle said, “at least he stayed there and finished his sermon even though he was embarrassed. I don’t think I could have done that. I would have walked off the alter and never returned!”
When it got around to me and what I would have done under the same circumstances after that homeless and needy line got messed-up, I simply answered, I would laugh and say, “Folks, now that I’ve got your attention ...” and then continue on with my sermon when the laughter died down.
Humor crosses all boundaries. It can end an embarrassing situation such as the one mentioned and it’s a wonderful way to lift another’s spirits. It is the season of love, and joy and sharing with family and friends. Laughter is infectious, but that’s a good thing. Remember, God enjoys a good laugh, too!
Merry Christmas to those of us who celebrate it. To all those sharing their own special holiday around this time of year, I wish you a most wonderful celebration.
Thanks for letting me share this week’s Spiritual Newsletter with you.
That’s all she wrote, folks!

Since this is my first appearance as a Spiritual Newsletter, host, I have no feedback to place here. Soooooooo, I will leave you with this thought.
We all go through life rushing and worrying and worse than that, pre-worrying! Life is difficult enough, so let's try to simplify it as much as possible. Love those who are close to your heart, extend kindness to those in need and don't sweat the small stuff--it all works out in the end!
Folks, it has been a pleasure!
Until next time--try a random act of kindness!
Ta,
